Will we hear Sail Away? When I've described the song, others have NO idea what the hell I'm talking about. Among the anticipated throwback vibes here, that would be a particular period nostalgia nugget.

After the Comes Alive tsunami, which was fine except for the inescapability and saturation of it all, when he came out with I'm in You, I thought, "jesus, are you kiddin'...?" It felt so much like cashing in on thin mush-saccharine appeal to teens.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:17pm
Funky16Corners:

Yeah, not his best work, and then Sgt Pepper which was a pretty much unforgivable clusterfuck, yet the Bee Gees took all those lemons and made a lot of valuable lemonade

"The Motion Picture Association of America has rated this film UC."

I think it bears mentioning that Frampton was too pretty for his own good. All of the people in charge fo merchandising rock and rollers couldn't help trying to sell him to the Tiger Beat crowd

You mean the Sgt Pepper movie Larry?

Yup.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:21pm

Which, I suppose, isn't much worse than a lot of stuff that came out in the 70s, but the star power in it, not to mention all of those Beatles songs couldn't save it

Hey Larry & Testifiers. Presume that we're in a Guilt-Free Zone! Saw Mr Frampton at SUNY Albany during my college days, '75 or early '76, for the first time. Also at the Coney Island( Asser Levy Park) Thursday concerts in the "Aughts".Very impressive!

hey Larry and testifiers. I like Frampton but he was not a good actor in that movie. Always thought it weird that BeeGees tried to out-Beatle the Beatles with Sgt Pepper movie esp. since they supposedly didn't like being compared to them

Mike Sin:

What I always found interesting is that Frampton was placed in the Herd and you would think, "OK, let's just add some more 'pretty boy' aspect to this band," but the dude shows up with monster chops. He's a great guitar player. I wish he stuck around in Humble Pie a bit longer.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:31pm
Funky16Corners:

Hey prudy!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:32pm

Hey Mike! Yes, indeed! Frampton is a tasteful and talented guitar player, something that sets him apart from a great deal of his contemporaries.

I always thought Frampton had the chops...alot of people just dissed him for his looks...

He became an easy target after Comes Alive

Just next time you go to one of Frampton's concerts (after the pandemic is over), do NOT record his performance or he'll throw your phone away. Haha!

It's funny, I remember the real "Frampton backlash" starting with "I'm in You" -- everyone looking for arrows to sling at the dude found it with that LP.

school was abuzz about Frampton comes alive, and the radio was drowning in it, but i wasn't even slightly interested.
it is landmark in it's sound quality though, for a live album.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:52pm
Funky16Corners:

Well, right now, nowhere, but if you draw a graph of how often I was going to see live music when I was 25, and today when I'm 58, there's a giant canyon after about 30 or so...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:52pm
coelacanth∅:

i did recognise that at the time
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:52pm

Yeah, it SOUNDS like a concert, which is one of the reasons I think it was so huge
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:54pm
Funky16Corners:

@Prudy - I Wanna Go To the Sun was the real sleeper for me. When I discovered that one I played it a LOT
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:55pm
Mike Sin:

"Frampton Comes Alive" had the same effect on me as "Wings Over America" -- so many of the original studio tracks sound a bit weird to me because I cranked up the live versions over and over like a mofo.. back when I was still using a Huffy bike as my main means of transport!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:56pm
Funky16Corners:

Yeah, you get attached to the versions you heard first. Whenever I hear the studio version of a song I end up inserting all of the ad libs from the love versions
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:57pm

I remember not being able to escape Frampton Comes Alive, on the radio constantly, the backlash came from that. (He had a cute bit part on Madame Secretary)

Irene:

I was a big fan pre-Comes Alive. I still have his two LPs post Humble Pie. Had a big post-high school crush on him. In 1975 I saw him in concert in at The Academy of Music, NYC, tripping on acid. Sadly, I got so turned off by the overexposure of the live album that I stopped listening to him. Your show today is a nice reminder of what I liked about him. A few years ago I got Frampton to sign my albums when he came in for an interview on Soundcheck. Really nice guy.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:00pm
Funky16Corners:

Hey Irene! Yes, I've heard that he's very cool in real life.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:02pm
Funky16Corners:

Most of his early solo albums feature Rick Wills on bass, who would go on to join Foreigner later on. Mick Jones plays on at least one of them, too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:05pm
Mike Sin:

What's interesting about the studio version of "Show me the Way" is how sparse the rhythm track is. just basically acoustic guitar, bass, and drums... I guess they were leaving a lot of room for the talk box before that overdub!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:07pm
Funky16Corners:

He was the producer on that album, too.

Frampton's early studio stuff as a solo act was some very nice stuff. Kind of unfortunate about the over-exposure of Comes Alive. Hope it made him ( and not just the record co) rich at least.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:40pm

I wonder what his deal with A&M was like? When Springsteen hit with Born To Run and Top Petty with Damn the Torpedoes they were both in contractual turmoil.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:43pm

I don't really study that stuff too much, but hopefully his time with The Herd taught him self-preserving business skills...but he was so young.
