Bliss: Use VLC (www.videolan.org...) or Media Player Classic (mpc-hc.org) rather than the pain of Windows Media Player.
Avatar Wed. 7/24/13 2:13pm Rich in Washington:

VLC is amazing! I highly recommend it. It's the Swiss Army knife of media players.
Avatar Wed. 7/24/13 2:13pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

By the way, thanks everyone for being part of it last week. (Sing with katydids, lastever.org...) It was a beautiful and sad show. Fred has dibs on using it for his funeral.

what's that my so-called life girl's name again?
  Wed. 7/24/13 2:15pm Bliss:

Just downloaded VLC, but don't know how to use it.

my fault/problem.
Don't missout on the show folks.
I'll have to figure it out, or not.
Avatar Wed. 7/24/13 2:16pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

VLC can be confusing. Attempt to "Open" this Network URL: www.wfmu.org...
Avatar Wed. 7/24/13 2:17pm pacific standard simon:

I split between foobar2000 for audio and vlc for video. And various file conversion utilities for that kind of thing.
  Wed. 7/24/13 2:17pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

I mean this URL: http://wfmu.org/wfmu_drummer.pls
Avatar Wed. 7/24/13 2:18pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Who here finds dish washing to be a completely transcendant experience?
  Wed. 7/24/13 2:18pm Bliss:

Open with----does not offer the VLC option even though I just downloaded VLC
Avatar Wed. 7/24/13 2:19pm pacific standard simon:

Probably have to restart to get an "open with" option.
  Wed. 7/24/13 2:20pm Bliss:

shows my fucking computer ignorance.

pacific..., gonna do what you said.
Avatar Wed. 7/24/13 2:21pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Don't waste time on that. Find a way to launch VLC on its own, having nothing to do with the browser. Then Media->Open Network Stream->Paste that URL
Avatar Wed. 7/24/13 2:22pm Rich in Washington:

@Bliss: if you download the wfmu stream m3u url, you can open it with VLC by going to 'file' > 'open file' or by copying the url and pasteing it in VLC via 'file'> 'open network' and paste url in url box
Avatar Wed. 7/24/13 2:22pm Rich in Washington:

Kenzo beat me to it.
Avatar Wed. 7/24/13 2:23pm pacific standard simon:

What Kenzo just wrote is correct.
Avatar Wed. 7/24/13 2:25pm Rich in Washington:

I need to watch Andre again. Haven't seen it since I was a teenager. I watched it because Siskel and Ebert told me to. Teenage me was somewhat intrigued, somewhat bored but I watched it because S&E told me it was important.
Avatar Wed. 7/24/13 2:25pm pacific standard simon:

I'm used to just clicking the URL, and foobar opening and playing automatically.
Avatar Wed. 7/24/13 2:26pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

@Rich: Me too, I hadn't seen it since I was a kid. I watched it recently and was blown away, this guy is talking about all the stuff I talk about now! I wasn't saying it yet when I was a kid. P.S. Doug has a great story about this movie; ask him.
Avatar Wed. 7/24/13 2:28pm Rich in Washington:

Siskel and Ebert were like these oracles telling me about all the movies I would never get to see - since I lived in the rural PNW - but that I should if I ever got the chance.
That was back long before the internet, where we heard about amazing stuff (read about it, etc) but wouldn't actually experience it for years.

  Wed. 7/24/13 2:30pm Bliss:

Installed VLC, made it my choice in Open With and it opened fine and showed Ken's info and the volume button is up and on and yet no sound.
I give up, y'all.
Avatar Wed. 7/24/13 2:31pm Rich in Washington:

@Bliss: popup player isn't working for you?
Avatar Wed. 7/24/13 2:31pm pacific standard simon:

I got turned into a night person at an early age because anything worth seeing or hearing was happening at a late night movie, or on an all-night radio show.
Avatar Wed. 7/24/13 2:31pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

The archive will be up by 4:30pm today!
@Rich: Popup player can be really taxing on older computers.
  Wed. 7/24/13 2:32pm Bliss:

I see thewindow, the cone, the Ken info and the timergoing, but no sound.
Avatar Wed. 7/24/13 2:32pm pacific standard simon:

You haven't accidentally muted your speakers, have you?
Avatar Wed. 7/24/13 2:33pm Rich in Washington:

@Bliss - if you have an iPhone, you can also try WFMU's free app.
Avatar Wed. 7/24/13 2:33pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

@pss: Late night radio and TV were indeed very mysterious and often intangible back then.
Avatar Wed. 7/24/13 2:34pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Wow, this live playlisting is completely impossible. I'm glad I made a robot, even if he will eventually bury me.
Avatar Wed. 7/24/13 2:35pm Rich in Washington:

@PSS: latenight freeform radio, weird magazines and fanzines and mailorder catalogs from Ralph Records and Rough Trade were my founts of cultural weirdness back in the day.
  Wed. 7/24/13 2:35pm Bliss:

What do you think are the chances that I have an iphone?

I give up.

Before I go, two things.

1) Washing dishes is cool by me.
2) What is the name of the movie y'all are talking about?

Avatar Wed. 7/24/13 3:01pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

If anyone hasn't figured it out, this is an unusual week in that I'm playing a show I already performed live previously. It never played here at WFMU before, nor ever made its way to the lastever.org archives.
Most weeks I would not dare to not be completely live on the air. But this is a recording of something that was completely live.
And now I'm desperately trying to make a playlist of it by ear which is a full-time job in itself.
  Wed. 7/24/13 3:02pm Bliss:

Thanks, Ken.

Be the toothpick on my sample plate.

I once made a dance break beat out of an old school REM track for one of my dj sets (sent through reverb), about a decade ago.
Avatar Wed. 7/24/13 3:32pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

I am actually watching a video of myself doing the 5/15/13 show to help me figure out what the samples are.
Avatar Wed. 7/24/13 3:34pm pacific standard simon:

I hope you are in a roomful of mirrors.
  Wed. 7/24/13 3:35pm Bliss:

Has anyone ever made video to go with your show, as far as you know?
Avatar Wed. 7/24/13 3:35pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Ooh, thanks for reminding me to film this.
Avatar Wed. 7/24/13 3:36pm pacific standard simon:

This calls for a Kenzo revolving camera on top of a Leslie revolving speaker.
Avatar Wed. 7/24/13 3:37pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

I have found video others made of my shows, yes. Also some people made dance pieces to them. And a professor in Austin was using them in his drawing classes each week.
Avatar Wed. 7/24/13 3:37pm βrian:

I can hardly believe I recognized that dialogue from -what - 25 years ago?
Avatar Wed. 7/24/13 3:39pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

in 25 years you'll recognize it from today instead
Avatar Wed. 7/24/13 3:40pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

And you will expect it to be followed by the Bee Gees with a numbers station
Avatar Wed. 7/24/13 3:41pm pacific standard simon:

I can hardly believe that in 25 years I'll be lucky to remember my own name.
Avatar Wed. 7/24/13 3:41pm still b/p:

Can you ask the prof if we can see the artwork?
  Wed. 7/24/13 3:42pm Bliss:

I was a Saturday Night Fever LP listening dude in the 70's

Some of you guys are too smart for me.

Yo---Gerry Rafferty.

(This show in May was originally scheduled to be four hours long. At the end I decided never to do shows again.)
Avatar Wed. 7/24/13 3:45pm pacific standard simon:

I was on the ferry yesterday and the purser's mate (I think) came on the PA system to announce that a blood sugar testing device had been found in the galley. Three announcements, and no one claimed it.

I'm all and none of the above, below, and lateral.
  Wed. 7/24/13 3:46pm Bliss:

and yet..you did shows again.
Avatar Wed. 7/24/13 3:46pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Because they'd passed out already? I remember visiting an emergency room because I'd lost my hearing. They called out my name after I'd waited for hours and I didn't hear them.
Avatar Wed. 7/24/13 3:47pm pacific standard simon:

I visited my own grave in May -- where I expect to be someday. It's really nice.
Avatar Wed. 7/24/13 3:48pm pacific standard simon:

They should've held up a sign, like at the airports.
Avatar Wed. 7/24/13 3:49pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

I left that place crying
  Wed. 7/24/13 3:49pm Bliss:

I once visited my grandad's grave site with my grandad---and now he's buried there.

Ken, glad you got your hearing back.

A friend explained to me the Arvo Pärt is thumb-sucking music. "But I like it," I replied.
Avatar Wed. 7/24/13 3:53pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

If you haven't heard the last few shows, I really recommend them. Last week's "Sing with katydids" (lastever.org...) had some fun calls throughout. "It's not going to stop" (lastever.org...) seemed important. "Other shapes are possible": Fish dances, before it's too late. (lastever.org...)

For sure, send me a sound postcard for the show
Avatar Wed. 7/24/13 3:56pm pacific standard simon:

Fitting in four hours of comments because I might be working next week.

Had you streaming in the car until 3:55 when the connection via iPhone crapped out. Good news: I stayed awake. Bad news: My wife kept telling me to shush and not talk over Wally and Andre. Cheers!

Mollusk-y, meaty program, Kenzo!
@Kenzo @2:52pm: Ahh, The Conversation, yes. One of my top fave films of all time. Other C's: Chinatown, Citizen Kane, Charley Varrick, Cool Hand Luke, Clockwork Orange, etc.
@Rev. Turnip Druid: That is one frightened-looking rabbit. My Cabbit avatar says: It's all gonna be OK, really.
