Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

There's a Troy, Illinois. I think there is one in Michigan too. I guess they all have high school football teams with the same name

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 6/21/19 12:10pm Uncle Michael:

Brian! Alas, there is no evidence that a Flint rendition exists. If you have information to the contrary, I'm all ears and hard drive.

Loves Johnny Rivers 'Summer Rain' but I guess I don't need FMU to hear it...

What version of Gershwin's "Summertime" are you gonna play UM?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 6/21/19 12:12pm Webhamster Henry:

That was a good variation on the standard Hometown lyrics! Perhaps written by someone who actually went to Troy.
My ex was just in a play there last month.

Kool et al, consistently underrated in their first decade. A really solid, interesting band
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 6/21/19 12:16pm Rich in Washington:

That Kool & The Gang instrumental made me want to airbrush a spaceship on the side of my boogie van.

The Isley Bros were so dang funky/groovy/awesome in the 70s.

Roberto!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 6/21/19 12:17pm Pedro in Arlington:

I remember "Summer Madness" being used on "General Hospital" circa 1982. Wacky flashback. The junk you watch in high school.
  Fri. 6/21/19 12:18pm rw:

Ha! Every time I hear this song I remember the year it was our summer jam. We were working downwind from the rendering plant.

Bluegrass covers of rock tunes always make me smile.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 6/21/19 12:39pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Always loved 'Girl Don't Tell Me' particularly - but then I thot TheBBoys did it earlier than in fact they did - & Gaylord Fields clued me it's a rewrite of 'Ticket' here...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 6/21/19 12:39pm Webhamster Henry:

This Ticket to Ride proves how even singer-songwriter songs had legs back in the 60s.
  Fri. 6/21/19 12:39pm Marie:

That GIF kills me. Hi-dy UM and all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 6/21/19 12:39pm Uncle Michael:

Gene Ludwig was from western PA, near Pittsburgh
  Fri. 6/21/19 12:40pm Dean:

I'll repeat a recommendation I've made here before: The Waybacks' instrumental cover of Floyd Cramer's "Last Date." Beautiful.
Avatar Fri. 6/21/19 12:41pm Martinibomb:

@DoctorJazz do you have a mixcloud page? just curious cause I follow someone on there called Dr Jazz?
  Fri. 6/21/19 12:41pm Funky16Corners:

Avatar Fri. 6/21/19 12:42pm Roberto:

I think I might prefer this to the orig.
  Fri. 6/21/19 12:42pm dan:

What amazes me is that a lot of these Beatles covers came out immediately after the original versions.

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 6/21/19 12:45pm Uncle Michael:

Lukie's here in the studio...it won't last. He won't get the attention we both feel he deserves.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 6/21/19 12:46pm Webhamster Henry:

@dan and they were all over the place too! I don't know anything about the music of today (Thanks, WMFU), so I don't know if this immediate cover phenomenon is still a thing.
Avatar Fri. 6/21/19 12:46pm Roberto:

From Lucy to Lukie? Love it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 6/21/19 12:47pm doctorjazz:

@Martinibomb, I've been told that some nefarious soul has been posting out there with (almost) the same name. But, no, it's not me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 6/21/19 12:47pm Uncle Michael:

He's Lucas...but often, Lukie.
  Fri. 6/21/19 12:47pm dan:

@Henry
Speaking of which , this version of "Oh, You Pretty Thing" came out immediately after Bowie's original.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 6/21/19 12:48pm Rich in Washington:

I have it on good authority that THAT Dr. Jazz got his diploma from a dubious Caiman Island university.
Avatar Fri. 6/21/19 12:49pm Roberto:

I was just thinking yesterday how Bowie's passing still doesn't feel real.
  Fri. 6/21/19 12:49pm Dean:

Kidz Bop most definitely produce immediate covers these days. Maybe that doesn't count.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 6/21/19 12:49pm Rich in Washington:

Dylan, Beatles, Bowie. Doing covers of them were somewhat obligatory, so it's not surprising that there are many contemporaneous covers of those acts.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 6/21/19 12:50pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

But there was like a Covers Industry - no? Try & jump the Charts - maybe make it ore Bourgeois for big sales...
  Fri. 6/21/19 12:50pm dan:

@Dean
Kidz Bop doesn't count.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 6/21/19 12:50pm Uncle Michael:

I have no idea when Arthur actually put this on tape.
  Fri. 6/21/19 12:50pm Funky16Corners:

This is amazing. Never heard Arthur’s version.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 6/21/19 12:51pm Rich in Washington:

The only Streisand album I own is the one with her cover of Bowie's Life on Mars. I only mention it because my wife recently expressed bewilderment when she say I had an album by Babs.
  Fri. 6/21/19 12:51pm Dean:

When my kids (kidz, whatever) were hooked on KB, I enjoyed those versions way more than the originals.

Gotta have Stoney End, Rich. I mean, it's got all that great Laura Nyro stuff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 6/21/19 12:52pm Uncle Michael:

Big Joe Turner did record Blues in the Night in 1942, but that versiob was with Freddie Slack. The 1958 date with Howard Biggs is accurate.
