Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

This definatly gives credence (but not proof) to the argument that some have that Jack may have been a bit more responsible for the wall of sound then Phil was. That although Phil came up with idea it was Jack's hands that made it possible.

I dug up that Patti Page because I remembered something about Blau's translation work in his book on JBIAAWALIP. I was suprprised to find a different translation out there!
But Scott did great work with the Shuman translations of Brel, which are good and also often adaptations of Brel's original metaphors. "Marathon", for example for Les Flamandes.
Avatar Fri. 3/29/19 1:19pm Franco Twinkie:

I can't help it, in my minds eye I see Scott on the deck of a tall ship in striped pants and tall boots blasting away in three strip technicolor.

Ranking Roger, left us a couple days ago
Avatar Fri. 3/29/19 2:23pm coelacanth∅:

i didn't give Scott Walker the time of day until "soused". after hearing that i checked out every album of his and zeroed in on several of his later albums.
...but i've been enjoying the earlier stuff this week too (but not "no regrets"! -cheesy 80s blah)
Avatar Fri. 3/29/19 2:24pm Franco Twinkie:

This stuff is a peculiar flavor for sure. It helps to imagine a stage, procenium and drapery. Or if that doesn't work for you, a rear projection of a ruined city.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 3/29/19 2:25pm Goyim in the AM:

This track is THE track for me, where the cheese and the heaviosity mix incredibly organically.
  Fri. 3/29/19 2:25pm frenchee:

HOLY SHIT this song suite is gawgeous.
  Fri. 3/29/19 2:26pm frenchee:

I need to go get some lunch but cannot tear myself away. Also, David Bowie ...uh...he liked Scott Walker, no?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 3/29/19 2:26pm The Oscar:

Man, I can only imagine hearing this in 1978, especially if you'd grown up with the Walker Brothers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 3/29/19 2:26pm chresti:

Franco played something of his, a few years back, I was struck by the demented sounding production and his voice
Avatar Fri. 3/29/19 2:27pm coelacanth∅:

yeah this shit's intense for it's time
Avatar Fri. 3/29/19 2:28pm coelacanth∅:

I always blame cheesy 80s blah on record labels
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 3/29/19 2:32pm Goyim in the AM:

Billy Ocean's (yes, THAT Billy Ocean) harmonies on this are incredibly good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 3/29/19 2:33pm Jeff Golick:

Oh, 80s drums, is there nothing you can do to sound like...other period drums?
Avatar Fri. 3/29/19 2:33pm coelacanth∅:

i guess to call no regrets "cheesy 80s" is a sort of compliment, considering it came 5 years before the 80s did.
it's just not my cuppa
Avatar Fri. 3/29/19 2:35pm Franco Twinkie:

I'm hanging on to all my records that suffer from production miscalculations. It's amazing how certain types of sonic stink can evaporate with time.

Michael, Do people complain about food that makes them sick while they are eating it?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 3/29/19 2:38pm Uncle Michael:

Bowie covered Nite Flights in 1993.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 3/29/19 2:39pm Uncle Michael:

People noticed how bad '80s drums sounded when '80s music started it's nostalgic return, I believe.
Avatar Fri. 3/29/19 2:40pm coelacanth∅:

chresti (@2.30) i don't! the masses jumped on the cheesewagon and even usually non-cheesy artists sucked in the 80s. (in my ever-so humble opinion!)
...and the non-Scott songs on nite flights are cheesy too, despite Scott's adventurous example.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 3/29/19 2:40pm Jeff Golick:

@Franco: heh. Yes. We were as fish, swimming in gated reverb waters. We knew no better.

Also: presumably the cocaine helped.

Avatar Fri. 3/29/19 2:45pm coelacanth∅:

i noticed 80's drums before the 80s, when they appeared; and i liked the gated thing; but the synthesized percussion on the cure's 2nd album turned me off for a long time. it was new and fresh - but i got very bored of syndrums and that gated sound pretty quickly. -far from the worst thing about popular 80s music.
Avatar Fri. 3/29/19 2:47pm βrian:

There was even an 80s-era band that named itself after the drum machine: It Play

He was apparently thinking about doing material a band could tour with at this point in his career -- and you can kind of hear it.

I remain doubtful about people routinely writing the stylized "Sunn O)))" for the band Sunn, but I guess everybody's doing it.

I'm glad you made time to make it all the way to Soused! Not doing so would be like a Bowie survey without Blackstar.
