Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

There's a guy up this way, annie, who's bought a few radio stations, and plays what amounts to that Music Of Your Life format a good part of the time. It's a crazy mix....Kenny Rogers or Celine Dion and then back to Perry Como or Margaret Whiting or Mills Brothers and then over to Pet Clark, all from his own music collection on these stations he runs just with his own money and requested donations.

They were sued in June '37 for back commissions, at which time Cheri McKay was "no longer with them."

These reviews from the '30s are just fascinating. In '33 they released a record, reviewed in Variety. Reviewer writes, "Merry Macs (whoever they are, for they're new, although probably a nom-de-disk) do okay by their assignments."

Kansas was a hotspot for jazz, once upon a time. Jay McShann was from there, I think...

Listening Out, I accepted a long time ago that there is too much content on WFMU, never mind the Web as a whole, for me to have any hope of listening to everything that would interest me. Just can't do it, like hoping to travel and visit every location in the world that intrigues me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 4/6/18 1:47pm Guido from Cologne:

That was the title song of joe jackson's second album, right?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 4/6/18 1:48pm Uncle Michael:

Yes. Joe's album of jump blues covers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 4/6/18 1:59pm Listening Out There:

Great rendition of "Bourgeois Blues." Had not heard that one. Uncle M knows how to pick 'em...
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 4/6/18 2:03pm annie:

i feel your pain, Parq
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 4/6/18 2:08pm doctorjazz:

Missed some nice set (gotta work, pay them bills), sounding great now though (is this Tuxedo Junction, Washboard Sam, I think...(actually my PC is way ahead, I'm up to Slim Gaillard, nowT ampa Red, glad I caught them).
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 4/6/18 2:09pm Uncle Michael:

Take care, Doc!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 4/6/18 2:09pm Parq:

Can you imagine what it must have been like to be in attendance at that Lincoln Memorial performance?
Avatar Fri. 4/6/18 2:10pm still b/p:

annie -- just looked back now and saw your pass-along of the "brutal..." comment ...and laughed out loud. Its exactly right, but I'm still onboard, baby! Rose and thorns, medicine and sugar, etc. And often the entertaining oddity of the octopus approach to music curating is part of the fun, BECAUSE of the surprises and clinkers and whiplashy shifts.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 4/6/18 2:13pm annie:

indubitably, b/p!!!
  Fri. 4/6/18 2:22pm Dean:

Spoiler alert: It was all a dream.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 4/6/18 2:22pm Uncle Michael:

Dammit, Dean.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 4/6/18 2:23pm Parq:

Dean, ah, but was it?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 4/6/18 2:23pm Listening Out There:

Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain...
  Fri. 4/6/18 2:24pm Dean:

Coulda been a hangover, I suppose.

I was just quoting a line from If I Were King of the Forest in a message to someone a moment ago.

...aka Scott Pruitt
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 4/6/18 2:24pm Parq:

That's a different take than the one in the movie, yes?

Off to lunch, thanks UM!

Fairly interesting musical analysis of Over the Rainbow...unless "analysis" and "rainbow" is like matter and anti-matter for ya.

A journalist on Twitter: Nifty stuff Scott Pruitt wanted so he could run the EPA more effectively, per the NYT: -- A $100,000/month charter plane membership -- A bulletproof SUV -- A bulletproof security desk -- A motorcade with sirens for speedy urban travel

Dorothy LaMour in a Loony Tune reminds me of that scene in one of the Hollywood Restaurant shorts where she persuades Jimmy Stewart to dance the conga and then scares him so much with her sexy moves that he announces that Mr. Smith had gone to Washington.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 4/6/18 2:29pm The Oscar:

So hard to hear this song without hearing the Firesign Theatre lyrics.

We're back from the shadows again...
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 4/6/18 2:29pm Uncle Michael:

See ya, NGH.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 4/6/18 2:30pm The Oscar:

Also, the Looney Tunes reference *I* think of when I hear Dorothy LaMour is the one where Daffy gets knocked silly and each of the stars circling his head is a caricature of a different Hollywood actress.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 4/6/18 2:30pm The Oscar:

@UM Yippie-tie-one-on!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 4/6/18 2:31pm Parq:

Oscar and UM, me too.
  Fri. 4/6/18 2:31pm Dean:

Funny you mention Firesign Theatre, @The Oscar, because I thought of Peter Bergman while "It Ain't Necessarily So" was spinning. The intro music for his daily radio show during the '80s on LA's KPFK was a new rendition of the song, every day.
Avatar Fri. 4/6/18 2:35pm still b/p:

Haven't had TCM for too long now. On Easter family visit, yeah, sister's got it. And late Sunday felt good to find Holiday Inn playing. Fun and comfort-foodish film satisfactions, shticky, some it of with requisite dreadfulness, but worst is blackface number...such yin and yang in the old movie zone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 4/6/18 2:39pm Roberto:

I think this was the closing music to John Sayles's Lone Star.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 4/6/18 2:39pm Uncle Michael:

Really?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 4/6/18 2:40pm Roberto:

Yes although maybe not that version of it.

So my song list is about 5 songs ahead of what's playing-is my internet connection so slow?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 4/6/18 2:49pm Uncle Michael:

I have no explanation, Doc.
  Fri. 4/6/18 2:49pm Dean:

@doctorjazz: Sometimes I fail to stop the player I'm using, for whatever reason. Instead, if I pause it and return minutes later, the program picks up where I left it, while the playlist moves on.

A kick to imagine everyone -- vocalists and musicians -- in the room to cut something like that.

A real golden throat coming up after Mr. Broonzy.

Been buying up recordings of Lil Green, for whom Big Bill played. Just love her. She might have recorded this tune, too.
