Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

She sounds fun.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 1/12/18 12:58pm northguineahills:

@βrian: It's one reason I didn't like the Stone. The artificial sense of rarefied air, no talking, no beverages, the art is 'precious'. Eff that, music is part of culture, and part of life, and part of that is eating, drinking, making merry, and communicating. Now, I don't anyone to be loud or rude, but that extreme gets me in the grits.

Avatar Fri. 1/12/18 1:09pm burke:

I got shushed about a month ago at a small venue, ambient music concert. It was sort of confusing to me. I thought about consulting Brian Eno on when and whether music is appropriate to talk over
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 1/12/18 1:10pm northguineahills:

Good point Burke, that's exactly Eno's point!

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 1/12/18 1:20pm melinda:

ngh what is the Stone?
  Fri. 1/12/18 1:20pm Dean:

I don't shush, though I did once storm out of a venue for a classical program because the host went on and on and on about sponsors, fund raising, etc. Ten or fifteen minutes. It was base and stoopid. With most music we dub "classical" (hey, classical dub--that'd be cool) the concert should be about the music. Large swaths of classical music audiences are remarkably insensitive to this fact. Rock, punk, some jazz...these might afford different norms, depending on the venue or the program. The music participates in an extra-musical vibe. Bill Evans Trio's "Waltz with Debby" audibly features iced drinks, that's cool. But if you're trying to get Rachmaninov's Vespers in a live performance, you don't want some kook interrupting the musical line by slowly unwrapping a package of cough drops during a fit. Unless, of course, it's in the score.
  Fri. 1/12/18 1:22pm Mark R:

...and now this beautiful Trane...wow, you're hitting all the right notes for me this afternoon.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 1/12/18 1:23pm Uncle Michael:

Glad you like it, Mark.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 1/12/18 1:23pm gloomsday:

yessss coltrane has arrived
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 1/12/18 1:23pm Parq:

Dean, unfortunately, the sponsor pandering is now part of the scene. I haven't attended a classical performance in a while, but at all non-profit jazz and world-music events, it's taken for granted.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 1/12/18 1:23pm doctorjazz:

The problem in music venues is often people who come there to have the music be background for their conversations. Sure, there are bars with music hired just for that, but it makes me crazy to go to a jazz club or other music venue presenting a creative musician, and have some non-stop conversation happening near me. I'll take the restrictive policy anytime (even though I agree with ngh in theory).
  Fri. 1/12/18 1:25pm Dean:

Another reason I don't shush is I'm a librarian, and it's a stereotype with which we're saddled that I avoid conforming to. But I do tell folks carrying on conversations on their cell phones near study areas to get the fuck out of the library.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 1/12/18 1:26pm Jeff Golick:

@melinda: The Stone is a music club in Manhattan, started by John Zorn. It's basically just a black box with no elevated stage, and room for about 50-60 people. No bar, no nothing. There's a bathroom, but I'm not 100% sure where it is.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 1/12/18 1:26pm northguineahills:

@melinda: The Stone is John Zorn's club on Ave C on E 2nd St near Houston in Alphabet City, Manhattan. They have great music, but I can't not have a beverage in a dark place w/o falling asleep. They wouldn't even let me have coffee. I still went many times, usually to support friends.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 1/12/18 1:26pm Uncle Michael:

If people payed a cover...talk, I guess. If they bought tickets...shut up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 1/12/18 1:26pm Uncle Michael:

*paid
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 1/12/18 1:27pm melinda:

doctorjazz that happened to me at a Neko Case concert. These ladies right next to me were yammering about house hunting. A guy near us told them to zip it, and they did for a while, then started up again. I don't get using a concert like that as a backdrop for visiting.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 1/12/18 1:28pm doctorjazz:

The Stone is moving to the Village, btw, at The New School
And, a $35 cover to the Village Vanguard feels like a ticket to me, don't want to hear tourists talking non stop (and it's happened many times-even worse in Jersey Jazz clubs, those rare beasts)
  Fri. 1/12/18 1:28pm frenchee:

darlings, that's what elbows are for: poking the yakkers. But I agree with UM, if they bought a ticket SHADDUP. @dean, I hear you about the librarian stereotype!
  Fri. 1/12/18 1:29pm Dean:

This sentence is the perfect hybrid of metaphysics and pragmatics: "There's a bathroom, but I'm not 100% sure where it is."
Avatar Fri. 1/12/18 1:30pm βrian:

I had a similar problem when going to see a film that was part of a University series. They insisted on giving a lecture about the film *before* the film was shown. I all but screamed "Shut up, shut up!". Lets just see the film and talk about it (or not) afterward.

Nothing worse than pre-digested cinema.

I've been to jazz clubs, the Jazz Standard in Chicago, being one, where the owner gets up before they introduce the band and they say, "This is a listening room, so please, out of respect for the musicians, keep your conversation to a minimum." And violators got a stern look and sometimes more if they wouldn't shut up. Someone in authority needs to set the tone, otherwise, anything goes. We're a society that's lost its manners. Glen O'Brien said if everyone had manners, we wouldn't need laws.

"Bun Implant" would be a good name for a band. I think we can all agree on that.

People ordering drinks is one thing, but when a noticeable din of colective constant chatter starts rising to complete with the performance, then it's time for some glaring and scowling.

Bun Implant is a terrific name. Especially if Bun E. Carlos were the drummer.

I'm not so sure about a wholesale cultural decline in politeness. I think we're seeing more brazen crudeness among our, uh, betters, which in turn models some folks' behavior. But I welcome our more widespread recourse to so-called dirty language. (It isn't Trump's use of the word that should offend us; it's what he intended by it.) I have long viewed crude language as a space occupied by adults for reasons I can't fathom. Are adults that insecure with their (I mean, our) authority? We tell our kids not to say those words, then we pay to be entertained by people who say them.

I remember the young guys working at a cart track as meaning business and having little patience. A teenager didn't stop at the directed moment when time was up, and as he went across the start line a worker flung a tire -- full-size car tire not a cart tire -- directly at him. Don't think that'd be in the employee training today.
Avatar Fri. 1/12/18 2:41pm βrian:

  Fri. 1/12/18 2:44pm Dean:

The "kids" at the track when we raced--they were probably in their late 'teens, early 20s--were quite considerate, even as they hurled themselves around the track twice as fast as my son and me. It's set up not to be an actual race. The incentive is to maintain a steady speed so as to optimize your average time traversing the course.
