Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

Good morning, Annie. Welcome to the Road Gang.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 9/29/17 7:51am annie:

to be sure i'm on the right page, what tune should i be hearing now? the pop-up says it's lucho bermudez... GM UM!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 9/29/17 7:52am Uncle Michael:

You should be hearing trucker radio.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 9/29/17 7:53am annie:

what i'm actaully hearing is some truckin' stuff...ok, yeah.. i hear it now. just tuned in! thanks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 9/29/17 8:00am annie:

many years ago, as i was tootlin' around town in upstate NY, my radio tuner switched to an omaha station and stayed there for about half an hour. it was so surreal. the explanation for that was atmospheric confusion due to hurricanes passing around the country..
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 9/29/17 8:03am doctorjazz:

Hey all, what time do the festivities actually start?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 9/29/17 8:04am Uncle Michael:

Today, I began the audio treat at 7:26 AM, ET.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 9/29/17 8:05am doctorjazz:

Wow, that's really early out in your neck of the woods, UM!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 9/29/17 8:05am annie:

hey doc! this is the inner sanctum of radio...the pre-show show
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 9/29/17 8:07am Uncle Michael:

I'm up at 6:00, normally.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 9/29/17 8:09am doctorjazz:

OK, generally get to work at about 8, have to go straight to the stream; this is really cool, old timey stuff now...
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 9/29/17 8:13am doctorjazz:

(been going to Wake and Bake, which is fun too...1st world problems!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 9/29/17 8:14am Uncle Michael:

I first heard Dave Nemo on October 22, 1988...driving from Dallas to Houston at night...between two Grateful Dead concerts.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 9/29/17 8:14am annie:

i don't do wakenbake..i've opted for wwoz. UM, are they still broadcasting this show?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 9/29/17 8:16am doctorjazz:

Haven't listened to WWOZ, any particular shows/times you like, @Annie?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 9/29/17 8:17am doctorjazz:

(loving this show, btw, this show was from 89, a year after that Dead marathon UM?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 9/29/17 8:18am doctorjazz:

did my Dead marathoning about a decade earlier...
  Fri. 9/29/17 8:18am dan:

1977 - The year of Studio 54, Son of Sam, the blackout, leisure suits, Saturday Night Fever, Star Wars and Norman Lear prime time shows
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 9/29/17 8:19am annie:

i really love the personal touch to this announcer's style. well doc, i mostly listen in the mornings, each deejay has a style, if you like brazilian, then saturdays are good starting around 1:00, going for about 5 hours. the station spends a lot of time highlighting their festivals, so you get lots of live broadcasts especially during festival times.
  Fri. 9/29/17 8:21am dan:

Commercial radio sucks today. It's more business than personality.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 9/29/17 8:21am annie:

my fave OZ deejay is Mark landesman on sunday ams starting at 6, going to 9, CDT. he plays nice jazz and some good blues. i sent him some music of a nola jazzman i knew in NY, Al Gallodoro. ... so i'm partial.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 9/29/17 8:22am doctorjazz:

Ahh, got to Jazz Fest twice in NO, loved it, now about 15 years ago (was scheduled to go again 4 years ago for my birthday, but my mother passed away right at the time and had to cancel...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 9/29/17 8:22am Uncle Michael:

The Road Gang is on satellite these days, but without Dave.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 9/29/17 8:24am doctorjazz:

It's a really nice mix of country/bluegrass/gospel.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 9/29/17 8:24am annie:

you'll get back, doc. festival is crazy time. i've thought of going, but not sure i could keep up with the 24-7 jollity..yeah, that makes sense UM, truckers can use the serius radio...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 9/29/17 8:25am annie:

sirius..
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 9/29/17 8:26am doctorjazz:

That's what I need, something to keep the bugs off my windshield...
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 9/29/17 8:27am doctorjazz:

JazzFest is pretty crazy, but you don't have to get to everything that is going on, pacing is key (especially if it's 95 degrees...). Shows all day, clubs every night, could easily wear yourself out.
  Fri. 9/29/17 8:28am dan:

Where is JazzFest?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 9/29/17 8:28am annie:

man, did walter brennan have a great long run.. yeah doc, i wear out just listening to the livewire. it's in new orleans dan
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 9/29/17 8:29am Uncle Michael:

Dan, it's in New Orleans. I went once in the early '90s.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 9/29/17 8:29am annie:

and, to be honest, i just wouldn't have fun in nola, the oppressive heat is not for me, so i get my vicarious thrills via radio
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 9/29/17 8:34am doctorjazz:

Heat is pretty bad in NO; JazzFest is usually the last week of April and the 1st of May. It's already quite hot, but not as bad as it gets later I'd guess. Of the 2 festivals I got to, the second one had light rain most of the day, which made it MUCH more comfortable (highlights: Stevie Ray Vaughan set, and Neville Brothers with Herbie Hancock sitting in, man...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 9/29/17 8:34am doctorjazz:

(the Gospel tent was fabulous whenever I wandered in, though...)
  Fri. 9/29/17 8:35am dan:

RAY STEVENS
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 9/29/17 8:43am annie:

yeah, i've heard about the gospel tent.. i'd hang there all day.. a friend who lives in richmond goes every year! has brass passes pre-ordered.. he's addicted.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 9/29/17 8:49am annie:

this is a wonderful show, UM, what a treat.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 9/29/17 8:53am Uncle Michael:

Thanks, Annie. I'm really glad I have a Nemo aircheck. I haven't located any others.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 9/29/17 8:53am annie:

i didn't actually miss buddy guy on tuesday, i heard the show from my apartment next door.. i was told that no sound came out of the building.... they were wrong. i would have sat out front in a lawn chair..
  Fri. 9/29/17 8:54am dan:

The We Didn't Start The Fire of country music
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 9/29/17 8:54am doctorjazz:

This is great! Nice way to start Friday.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 9/29/17 8:54am doctorjazz:

(I'd like to catch Buddy Guy...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 9/29/17 8:55am annie:

he's on tour... might see where he is if you can catch him. i'm sorry i forgot where you live doc..
Avatar Fri. 9/29/17 8:59am glenn:

that's some stellar banjo playing going on right now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 9/29/17 8:59am doctorjazz:

NY/NJ area, I'll Google, thanks Annie.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 9/29/17 8:59am ausmanx:

this is all FAR too genteel for trucker radio. you need some AUSTRALIAN trucker radio to really get things started in the morning...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 9/29/17 9:00am annie:

oh, geez, a whole new thing to listen to, thanks aus

Graham Parker's version of Hold Back The Night rivals the original. I can't decide which one is better
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 9/29/17 9:16am Uncle Michael:

Refugee was from the 2nd album.
Avatar Fri. 9/29/17 9:16am glenn:

and then, if memory serves, they were dylan's band for the slow train coming tour.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 9/29/17 9:16am doctorjazz:

Hold Back The Night charted? Wasn't actually listening to "hit radio" at this point...
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 9/29/17 9:17am Stanley:

Hey-up, howya doing Uncle Michael. First half-day Friday I've had in ages. So happy to be able to tune in again.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 9/29/17 9:18am Uncle Michael:

"charted" is a low bar

Stanley!
  Fri. 9/29/17 9:18am joe:

@glenn I think there is something to be said in how you phrased that. It was still a time when "hits" could be regional. Although this was an all over hit there still could have been those areas where it took over the local supermarket
Avatar    Fri. 9/29/17 9:19am PsychopathJimFields:

OK. It's the first one I heard, still trapped in AM radio Hell.

  Fri. 9/29/17 9:33am joe:

So 1974 was cool as it was the year of my birth but 1977 is probably more significant as based on what UM has played this would be the year I start to be much more aware of what was coming out of the radio

it's a good question, Uncle Michael. i think Ted Albert was just as astute a talent spotter, but marketing-wise he made mistakes; some think The Easybeats should have been as big as The Beatles and The Stones, but Ted got them wrong - but then AC/DC learnt with Ted from the mistakes made earlier. anyway, Clinton Walker reckons three Oz bands changed the whole of popular music in the 70s, The Bee Gees, The Saints and AC/DC. and none were from Sydney or Melbourne.

If you keep looking, though, I think it's a more complicated and blurry business of contrasting tales for the band name. (And 10cc is a ways off, I believe, from the real average.)

Visiting with a couple friends last week, two of us were eagerly talking about 10cc and the less revisited tracks. The woman with us, nearly entirely unfamiliar with the music, listened to two examples, but when I suggested a third, she raised her hands and said 'No," as if even one more would be distinctly uncomfortable. So we didn't get to "Hotel."

@Stevel I sprayed Black Flag right into their point of entry on the ground next to my foundation. As the foam subsided I heard them buzzing around and pictured a colony death within, but something went wrong. Wondering if it wasn't concentrated enough because I forgot to shake the can.

The thing is this (this is the thing): 1977 is the year I discovered college and freeform radio (yes, at 8, it's a long story involving hip and unhip older siblings), so while I know 95% of this stuff and am enjoying this show, this wasn't my soundtrack either.

In 1977, my older brother (the unhip one) ran afoul of a white-faced hornets' nest. Hilarity did not ensue.

Love this track, the ELO Do Ya (played it for my 18 year old, she made me play it over and over and checked out the ELO catalog-and she generally only likes punk rock, though you could consider this sort of proto pun...)

Unhip brother worked out the Crazy on You intro in a week, which was a surprisingly peaceful week at our house because he wasn't blasting his Strat through his Peavey Bassman-copy.
