Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

@Jeff
I believe that Black Friday is about a Friday that is black.
Avatar Fri. 7/28/17 12:08pm Jeff Golick:

@Doug: that seems credible, but I'm dubious.
Avatar Fri. 7/28/17 12:09pm Jeff Golick:

You can't tell me this isn't a chart *topper*
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 7/28/17 12:11pm melinda:

Why did I not know that Love Hurts was Nazareth? Always learning.
  Fri. 7/28/17 12:12pm Dean:

Earliest entry in OED says, "A Friday on which an examination is held." A quote from 1610 supporting the definition reads, " Let me tell them of another schoole tricke; at the worlds end there is a black friday, a generall examination."
  Fri. 7/28/17 12:13pm Dean:

So, will there be a quiz?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 7/28/17 12:14pm Uncle Michael:

Avatar Fri. 7/28/17 12:26pm listener james from westwood:

July '75 I had just become a New Jerseyan! Family moved out earlier that month from the Bronx. Started 1st grade in NJ 2 months later.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 7/28/17 12:26pm Stanley:

These records were all released on different labels, over here in UK.
Roxy was an Island signing, for instance.
Avatar Fri. 7/28/17 12:27pm Gary:

This is w/out question my favorite track of the year
  Fri. 7/28/17 12:27pm Dean:

I think the only X-rated movie I've seen is Caligula, which sucked, figuratively speaking. Was Pasolini's Canterbury Tales also X-rated? I saw that, too.
Avatar Fri. 7/28/17 12:28pm Webhamster Henry:

@Dean yes .. back when X was X! Midnight Cowboy was also X.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 7/28/17 12:28pm Uncle Michael:

23W!
  Fri. 7/28/17 12:29pm Dean:

Must correct an erroneous comment earlier this week to the effect that Irvine Arditti played on Art Garfunkel's Watermark. Not so. He played on Lee Oskar's After the Rain.

Thanks, @WH. Saw Midnight Cowboy, too. Guess that makes me a viewer of triple X.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 7/28/17 12:29pm Stanley:

...and my first, Easy Rider.

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 7/28/17 12:31pm Uncle Michael:

John! love northern nm
  Fri. 7/28/17 12:31pm Dean:

The line "Got my finger on the trigger, I'm gonna pull it" is ambiguous in a way that kinda messes with the vibe by turning the refrain into a fart joke.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 7/28/17 12:32pm Uncle Michael:

Rich!

Dean, maybe a clitoris joke?
  Fri. 7/28/17 12:33pm johnk77:

art porn does not equal

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 7/28/17 12:34pm Uncle Michael:

Last Tango was also X
  Fri. 7/28/17 12:34pm Dean:

Well, there's a third reading.

"Fanny" might be my favorite Bee Gee's song. No, it's not a butt joke.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 7/28/17 12:34pm Brian in UK:

Hello Uncle, ever see the first tango?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 7/28/17 12:35pm Uncle Michael:

nope, I waited till they got it right
  Fri. 7/28/17 12:35pm melinda:

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 7/28/17 12:36pm Brian in UK:

Dean funny how American fannys are backwards facing where ours are forwards facing.
  Fri. 7/28/17 12:36pm Dean:

Has something to do with the side of the road we drive on. Most American drivers are assholes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 7/28/17 12:37pm Stanley:

Dean - "Fanny" has a different meaning for us. In the same general area, though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 7/28/17 12:37pm doctorjazz:

Great Bowie hit!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 7/28/17 12:38pm Brian in UK:

Fortunately, my pub rendezvous isn't until 7.30 tonight, which means I can luxuriate in teenage nostalgia. Man, I had very cool taste back then
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 7/28/17 12:43pm Uncle Michael:

That illusion stems from the fact that I have very cool tasste *now*.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 7/28/17 12:43pm Stanley:

@johnk77 - you mean like butt-less chaps?
(I've been waiting an age to say that)
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 7/28/17 12:44pm Uncle Michael:

I have to say that every time someone asks what the hell I'm wearing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 7/28/17 12:45pm Stanley:

@UM - you get those phone calls too?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 7/28/17 12:46pm Brian in UK:

Stuck with one ear on the cricket Test match where England are whipping South Africa.
Avatar Fri. 7/28/17 12:48pm listener james from westwood:

It's my understanding that the Thin White Duke was snorting a lot of thin white lines 'round that stretch.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 7/28/17 12:48pm Stanley:

Brian - visions of you in the garden deck chair, warm beer in hand, hanky on head.
Salad days, mate.
Avatar Fri. 7/28/17 12:50pm listener james from westwood:

Fuckin' loved the SNF soundtrack from the git-go in '77 as an 8-year-old and love it to this day.
Avatar Fri. 7/28/17 12:51pm Doug Schulkind:

Fill-inky Dinky Time!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 7/28/17 12:51pm Brian in UK:

Stanley, that's done down to the cellar for beer.
Avatar Fri. 7/28/17 12:51pm listener james from westwood:

And if you ever revisit that film, revel in how actually bleak it is. Wow. Dark horse entry along w/ French Connection and other 70s films in terms of stark NYC cinema.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 7/28/17 12:51pm Stanley:

Me too, cheers.
Avatar Fri. 7/28/17 12:51pm listener james from westwood:

And with ya on loving this track too!
Avatar Fri. 7/28/17 12:53pm Jeff Golick:

Avatar Fri. 7/28/17 12:56pm listener james from westwood:

@Jeff, that's of those many film series that makes me wish I were independently wealthy so I could take in the whole damn program.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 7/28/17 12:56pm Stanley:

....and a packet of 'Old Scrotum's Original Scratchings'
Avatar Fri. 7/28/17 12:56pm listener james from westwood:

@davefromtoronto, I can relate to that! And great to hear the ones I've never heard, like this jewel of a Baez track!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 7/28/17 12:56pm Uncle Michael:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 7/28/17 12:57pm joe:

Diamonds and Rust
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 7/28/17 12:57pm Uncle Michael:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 7/28/17 12:58pm Stevel:

My wife hates that I love the Judas Priest version of Diamonds and Rust. I also love Joan Baez. Can't we all just get along?
  Fri. 7/28/17 12:58pm Dean:

Maybe Joan Baez was the real force behind the backwards masking scandal.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 7/28/17 12:58pm joe:

Yup www.youtube.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 7/28/17 12:58pm joe:

Avatar Fri. 7/28/17 2:12pm The Oscar:

@Jeff Totally! As a kid, I was mostly aware of Kiss through comics and action figures, and always assumed they were hardcore metal, or at least something like Alice Cooper. It made zero sense to me when I learned they were the band that did "Rock & Roll All Nite."
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 7/28/17 2:12pm Rich in NC:

Great show today Uncle Michael
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 7/28/17 2:12pm joe:

@JeffGolick makes total sense. My friends and I talk about that all the time. Actually despised Kiss because of it until I was in my 30's. When we were kids and saw Kiss we basically expected them to sound like we eventually found Slayer to sound like years later. So we were really pissed that something so "wimpy" could come out of something so cool looking. Things are different now.

Saw a guy walk into the (now gone) J&R Records in lower Manhattan and ask an employee "Are the Greatful Dead disco?"
  Fri. 7/28/17 2:59pm Dean:

A happy record store moment for me was when the father of a friend with whom I worked would drop in to visit. He was even then an older guy with Einstein-like hair and a goatee. Once, he spied Alternative TV's recent release, Vibing Up the Senile Man. Grabbed a copy and brought it to the counter, where he said to an unsuspecting clerk, "I'll take a dozen of these."
