Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

I sort of grew up in the sticks, as they say, so country music of the shitkicker variety was hard to avoid in the 70s. So much of it's grown on me now, though.

I think you're on to something, Rich in WA. I'm generally not a country fan (w/ exceptions, e.g., who doesn't like Dolly?), but I'd love to hear a program of playlists like that last one. Also, they'd eventually have to get around to playing Ringo's Beaucoups of Blues.

@geez heh. mostly i'm glad you reminded me. Honky Tonk Radio Girl used to be in my regular rotation, but dropped off somehow. probably due to not enough hours in the day for all the shows i want to listen to.
Avatar Fri. 6/9/17 1:39pm Lane Gray:

Geezerette, he also did an album of instrumental covers of Gordon Lightfoot. Second Cup of Coffee was killer.
Avatar    Fri. 6/9/17 1:41pm geezerette:

@Hyde, it's a problem! This station is so addictive. Embarassment of riches, lucky us.
Avatar    Fri. 6/9/17 1:42pm geezerette:

@Lane, love Gordon Lightfoot!
Avatar Fri. 6/9/17 1:42pm Lane Gray:

Wednesday night is too crowded.... Two great shows here, and three hours of Nita on WDVX (community radio in Knoxville. City motto: Stop Willie before he kills again)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 6/9/17 1:43pm Uncle Michael:

It really is, Geez. Daniel Blumin exposed me to Electric Sandwich.
Avatar    Fri. 6/9/17 1:43pm geezerette:

UM, they're so Spinal Tap!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 6/9/17 1:44pm Uncle Michael:

Is that bad?
Avatar    Fri. 6/9/17 1:44pm geezerette:

...but much better musicians...

No, it's great! They're goofy in a really fun way!

the blog post i'm reading about Electric Sandwich claims that not only did they practice a lot, they reserved one night a week to talk about their creative visions

Another interesting steel player is Mike Perlowin. Almost exclusively classical. Has recorded the Firebird Suite, is currently working on Dvorak's New World Symphony
Avatar    Fri. 6/9/17 1:51pm geezerette:

ooh,Allmans went Zappa for a moment...
Avatar    Fri. 6/9/17 1:53pm geezerette:

@Lane, that sounds great! Will definitely check him out. Thanks!

a steel guitar firebird suite? i will hunt that down and consume it.

Hey Coel!

For reasons I choose to keep to myself, having the Nairobis come on the radio at this particular moment is a marvelous bit of coincidence.

BJ Cole's Transparent Music features steel guitar performances of Debussy, Satie, and Ravel.

arguably the greatest (over-looked) psychedelic sunshine pop album of all time, not to mention best cover, too!
Avatar    Fri. 6/9/17 2:00pm geezerette:

Yes,it IS. :)
Avatar Fri. 6/9/17 2:01pm Lane Gray:

I think Rameau would go well with the steel. For some reason, the Lawrence KS NPR station is fond of the lesser-known Frenchman
  Fri. 6/9/17 2:02pm Dean:

E.g., keyboard suite transcriptions? Or the big whoop-ass operas?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 6/9/17 2:05pm Uncle Michael:

Michael Carabello thing going on, on this Hey Joe, eh?
Avatar Fri. 6/9/17 2:05pm Rich in Washington:

Every Joe I've ever worked with eventually tired of me yelling the first line of that song to them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 6/9/17 2:06pm Uncle Michael:

Did they all eventually show up with a gun?
Avatar Fri. 6/9/17 2:08pm Rich in Washington:

one threatened to, so I stopped.

Genesis

For years...maybe still..I couldn't shake the image and title of the MB big one as "Knights in White Satin," and I think that silly-ass Ajax TV ad with a white knight had something to do with it., although in my image there was more satin-stylin' frippery for the knight.
  Fri. 6/9/17 2:23pm Dean:

Yes. I mean, "Yes, VP, Genesis is one of those bands." Not "Yes is one of those bands."
Avatar Fri. 6/9/17 2:23pm V Priceless:

love this DB record! haha @Dean

@ Uncle M - well said, re: 'Birthday'
Avatar Fri. 6/9/17 2:29pm V Priceless:

I could make the argument for Alice Cooper, post-original band, but that's just the purist in me. Still love Alice, but the original Alice Cooper Group...whoa
  Fri. 6/9/17 2:30pm Dean:

Well, shoot, Allman Bros.
Avatar    Fri. 6/9/17 2:32pm The Oscar:

Seems obvious, but Pink Floyd? It also seems like the BeeGees should count, even though there was no lineup change that I'm aware of.
Avatar Fri. 6/9/17 2:33pm Lane Gray:

Dean, some of each. Mike has worked with orchestras, and built stuff up with multitrack
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 6/9/17 2:33pm Uncle Michael:

I think Alice the singer quit Alice the band and went solo...not really a redefining of a brand. I think the Allman's just evolved through personnel changes and the brand remained the same. Also nice that they never stopped trying and just coasted.
Avatar Fri. 6/9/17 2:33pm V Priceless:

10cc...still made some fine records, but never as genuinely nutty after Godley and Creme split
