Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

Howdy, UM, and happy 200th!!! Good heavens, 100 seems like just yesterday!
Avatar Fri. 4/28/17 12:01pm Jeff Golick:

Love the image (of your making?), but toggled that thing to a standstill with a quickness.
Avatar Fri. 4/28/17 12:01pm Jeff Golick:

Today is indeed a special day. It's my mom's 90th.

Birthday, I mean. She hasn't DJ'd even one GTDR program.

Great start, Joni! Love this song!
Avatar Fri. 4/28/17 12:04pm listener james from westwood:

As I've just reached Watergate in the Nixon biography, this is doubly thematic as a music year.

@Dean: 90! Many happy tidings to her!
  Fri. 4/28/17 12:04pm Dean:

Thanks, @Jeff G. I'll convey your good wishes to her. Of course, she'll reply, "Who?" But at 90, she says that a lot.
Avatar Fri. 4/28/17 12:04pm Doug Schulkind:

We are hip to your tracks, Uncle Michael.
Avatar Fri. 4/28/17 12:04pm βrian:

UM, that's mighty civil of you to have the agitated gif toggle.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 4/28/17 12:04pm Brian in UK:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 4/28/17 12:05pm Uncle Michael:

James! Jeff! Dave! Dean! Mark! Brian! Doc! Ray! Melinda! Doug!
  Fri. 4/28/17 12:05pm Dean:

And thank you, @ljfw. Which biography? I've only read one of the Ambrose volumes, many years ago. Having grown up in Whittier myself, I should read more about him.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 4/28/17 12:05pm Uncle Michael:

Not my own gif, sorry
Avatar Fri. 4/28/17 12:05pm βrian:

@Dean: you must have some good Mom Quotes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 4/28/17 12:05pm Stanley:

'72 - I remember it well. Thirteen years old, hanging out with sixteen year old music freaks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 4/28/17 12:06pm Mark the Sardine:

loved how they ended The Martian with this
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 4/28/17 12:07pm Uncle Michael:

Avatar Fri. 4/28/17 12:11pm V Priceless:

Unc! Hey!
Avatar Fri. 4/28/17 12:12pm listener james from westwood:

@Dean: It's "Richard Nixon: The Life," by John Farrell. IIRC a 2017 pub date. Goes into lots of detail from his forebears on through his pre-VP years about which I knew nearly nothing.
Avatar Fri. 4/28/17 12:12pm V Priceless:

congrats on 200th show!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 4/28/17 12:13pm Artie Haywire:

Well, this is a nicely appointed caboose!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 4/28/17 12:13pm Uncle Michael:

VP!

Thanks, everyone.

Had to go with the long version because I know how much everyone of you loves Steely Dan.
Avatar Fri. 4/28/17 12:13pm Roberto:

If it's Friday we're talking about, I'm always happy to Do It Again.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 4/28/17 12:13pm Uncle Michael:

Roberto!
Avatar Fri. 4/28/17 12:13pm Jeff Golick:

Really wish I could ditch the 'phones and let the Dan serenade my entire office...

Avatar Fri. 4/28/17 12:14pm Jeff Golick:

Side one, track one...album one?
  Fri. 4/28/17 12:14pm Dean:

Thanks, all, for birthday greetings to my mom. She refuses to acknowledge her supernumerary achievement. Thinks she's still 35. But when I visit and offer to take her bungee jumping she routinely declines.

Yes, every one of us.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 4/28/17 12:15pm melinda:

This is my favorite Steely Dan song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 4/28/17 12:15pm Uncle Michael:

I need a "Top Miguel" luchero mask for next year's Hoof n Mouth.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 4/28/17 12:15pm Uncle Michael:

Tio*
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 4/28/17 12:15pm Stanley:

Look what you're doing to me!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 4/28/17 12:15pm melinda:

The Dan makes everyone gyrate.
Avatar Fri. 4/28/17 12:16pm V Priceless:

i'm down with the Dan
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 4/28/17 12:17pm Brian in UK:

I think we can all remember the first time hearing Do It Again.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 4/28/17 12:17pm Uncle Michael:

But are you down with the clown?
Avatar Fri. 4/28/17 12:17pm listener james from westwood:

That's up to Krusty!
Avatar Fri. 4/28/17 12:18pm Flash Strap:

Happy 200, UM!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 4/28/17 12:18pm Uncle Michael:

Thanks, Flash.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 4/28/17 12:19pm Uncle Michael:

Doff your hats for Cuba Gooding Sr.
Avatar Fri. 4/28/17 12:20pm Doug Schulkind:

Even Gandhi played the fool.
  Fri. 4/28/17 12:20pm Dean:

Thanks, @ljfw. I see the index has an entry for "Whittier, parochialism of." That's priceless. In 1976 I was working at the public library in Whittier, where the community meeting room was called the Nixon Room. One day a supervisor asked me to set up chairs for a screening of a movie. "In the Nixon Room?," I inquired. The supervisor glowered, "It's the multi-purpose room!" Took a while for the bruise of '74 to heal in Whittier.
Avatar Fri. 4/28/17 12:20pm listener james from westwood:

All those glorious instruments on this track. And of course Cuba!
Avatar Fri. 4/28/17 12:21pm Jeff Golick:

Oh shit now I'm singing along. That's not good for anybody.
Avatar Fri. 4/28/17 12:22pm Jeff Golick:

Unsolicited book rec.: I found NIXONLAND by Rick Perlstein to be a very enjoyable and eye-opening piece of modern history.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 4/28/17 12:23pm Brian in UK:

This is one long probation period.
  Fri. 4/28/17 12:24pm Dean:

I've heard several favorable comments about that Perlstein book.
  Fri. 4/28/17 12:24pm Marie:

Congrats, UM!!! And that is awesome about Cheyenne--I have loved her shows.
Avatar Fri. 4/28/17 12:24pm Roberto:

Yes, Jr. would have been birthed already in '72.
Avatar Fri. 4/28/17 12:25pm listener james from westwood:

Related to the Jr./Sr. point: I had someone calling our current pope Francis I in proofs. Not yet he isn't, not until a future pope also takes the name after the Big Smoke!
  Fri. 4/28/17 12:25pm Dean:

A couple days ago another fun theme struck me, a program featuring the shortest (or longest) tracks by artists.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 4/28/17 12:30pm Uncle Michael:

When was WWI first called WWI, and not "The Great War"?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 4/28/17 12:32pm Stanley:

I've got a Basketball Jones.
Avatar Fri. 4/28/17 12:32pm listener james from westwood:

I would guess after the point where that thing in Poland began looking like another biggie, but could have been after everything was over, too. The answer would make for an interesting corpus search!
  Fri. 4/28/17 12:33pm Dean:

Google Ngram Viewer shows references to World War I in ... 1915!
  Fri. 4/28/17 12:34pm Dean:

Just a bump. Wider usage didn't begin the ascent until 1937.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 4/28/17 12:35pm Uncle Michael:

"I'd like you to meet my first wife..."
  Fri. 4/28/17 12:36pm Dean:

I suppose it's possible that the early occurrences are false hits, e.g., a generic reference to world war followed by first person singular pronoun.
Avatar Fri. 4/28/17 12:36pm βrian:

But that wasn't a "one." It was a LATIN SMALL LETTER L. So, World War "el." is what they intended, surely.
Avatar Fri. 4/28/17 12:37pm listener james from westwood:

Oh, bloody el.
Avatar Fri. 4/28/17 12:40pm βrian:

J.B. shuts the ability to get work done right down.
  Fri. 4/28/17 12:40pm Dean:

The result @12:33 was for a search on

world war i

...but Ngram is case-sensitive. A search for

World War I

...produces results as early as 1812. Hmmm, I think I'll run a search for:

winning lottery numbers
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 4/28/17 12:46pm melinda:

@Dean: great story about the Nixon Room.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 4/28/17 12:47pm melinda:

What's the news about Cheyenne? I missed it. Liked her shows, too.
Avatar Fri. 4/28/17 12:47pm listener james from westwood:

LOL @ the multipurpose room, Dean!

@Jeff, full endorsement from this quarter on Nixonland.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 4/28/17 12:48pm melinda:

  Fri. 4/28/17 1:02pm Dean:

Nope.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 4/28/17 1:02pm Goyim in the AM:

  Fri. 4/28/17 1:04pm Dean:

There's another future show theme: songs for which nobody knows the words.
Avatar Fri. 4/28/17 1:04pm Roberto:

Exile might be my favorite album of '72. It definitely was at one time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 4/28/17 1:04pm Uncle Michael:

  Fri. 4/28/17 1:08pm Dean:

Avatar Fri. 4/28/17 1:09pm geezerette:

hahahahaha...
Avatar Fri. 4/28/17 1:10pm Jeff Golick:

Another show idea: groups that kept going despite losing a key frontperson - Clash, VU, Doors...it'd be a grim show, but perhaps grimly fascinating.
Avatar Fri. 4/28/17 1:10pm geezerette:

Your avatar doesn't look 200, UM.

  Fri. 4/28/17 1:38pm Marie:

Hye, I have an Elvis album that I think is one of his best called "Rhythm & Country"--I had to Google it cuz mine is in storage. It was recorded in 1973 and released in 1998, says Amazon.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 4/28/17 1:39pm Uncle Michael:

Pedro, Best Buy charges MORE than $20 for big TVs.
Avatar Fri. 4/28/17 1:40pm Jeff Golick:

I can sing along but would not have been able to name this artist (King Harvest) if my life was at stake.
Avatar Fri. 4/28/17 1:41pm Pedro G.:

And I'm sorry but I just don't get the new releases on cassette craze. Vinyl? Yes, of course. But cassettes were always crap. OK, I get the irony. Heck, I have quite a collection of 8-tracks sitting around. But cassettes were never fun. More like a necessity in the case of collecting concerts etc.
Fri. 4/28/17 1:41pm Alex In Illinois:

Our last CRT TV was on a shelf that I reassembled incorrectly. In the middle of the night, there was a loud jarring crash. Next day, I was hauling it to Best Buy for recycling. And also to buy its much lighter replacement.

  Fri. 4/28/17 1:48pm Marie:

"a" swampy morass--I am not being able to focus on productive things myself--do I need to turn the show off? :<{
  Fri. 4/28/17 1:48pm Dean:

Swampy Morass would be a good band name.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 4/28/17 1:49pm Uncle Michael:

More Swampy Ass, not so much.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 4/28/17 1:50pm Lewis:

@UM- are you following Doug down the horrible pun rabbit hole?
  Fri. 4/28/17 1:50pm Marie:

I have to give a shout out out to Bodega Pop--the show this week featured this amazing Latvian artist, whose name I cannot even bring into my mind right now... What kind of band do you think "Swampy Morass" would be? I'm thinking might be a good solo artist name? Like "Feist" or something?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 4/28/17 1:52pm Lewis:

Pop music today is produced by machines...
Avatar Fri. 4/28/17 1:53pm geezerette:

UM, that's not an illusion.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 4/28/17 1:53pm doctorjazz:

@Dean, the Tony Coulter Tape Hiss show is indeed a fun listen, but it's what's on those cassettes of his that makes it for me (the weirdest, most offbeat stuff).
  Fri. 4/28/17 1:53pm Marie:

It seemed to have more variety and more heart--less corporate?
  Fri. 4/28/17 1:55pm davefromtoronto:

anyone see the Paul Williams documentary?

really good.
Avatar Fri. 4/28/17 1:55pm Jeff Golick:

@Roberto: you are correct. Singer is relating the story of Brandy; he's not the absent sailor. (Or is he...?)
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 4/28/17 1:56pm melinda:

I try to avoid it as much as possible but a lot of current pop vocals sound somewhat synthesized, in an annoying way. I don't understand the technology behind it but I sort of hate it. Not the same as straight-on robot voice from the early 80s.
Avatar Fri. 4/28/17 1:56pm Roberto:

My '72 school bus playlist: Crocodile Rock and You're So Vain. I'm not sure anything else was ever played!
  Fri. 4/28/17 1:56pm Dean:

Gary's artist was Imants Kalniņš.

Swampy Morass to my mind would sound like a cross between the Allman Bros. and a stoner band.

For sure, @doctorjazz.

Bette Midler is married to one of the Kipper Kids. That just cracks me up.
  Fri. 4/28/17 1:56pm ronzoni:

i've never thought much about this bette cover but yeah, i like it.
Avatar Fri. 4/28/17 1:57pm Roberto:

My kids are 6 and 11, so I hear a lot of today's radio pop. I confess I have a soft spot for some of it. I love Jessie J., Ariane Grande, and Nicki Minaj's "Bang Bang," some of Taylor Swift's stuff.
  Fri. 4/28/17 1:58pm Marie:

Thanks, Dean, though I think they would have to be kind of ironic to have that band name.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 4/28/17 1:58pm doctorjazz:

Avatar Fri. 4/28/17 2:03pm Jeff Golick:

Wish I could find this link to a recent article about "today's music," and how it is influenced by "today's drugs." I suppose that article gets rewritten every ten years or so.
Avatar Fri. 4/28/17 2:03pm Lane Gray:

The highway came first. Then they removed the intersections, making it a freeway.
  Fri. 4/28/17 2:03pm Marie:

I heard it's not really Bette Midler on Broadway, just a Bette Midler lookalike. She is said to be in a coma somewhere in South America
  Fri. 4/28/17 2:03pm Dean:

One and the same, @Roberto, I'm pretty sure, because the freeway is interrupted now and then by limited-access highways.
Avatar Fri. 4/28/17 2:05pm geezerette:

Avatar Fri. 4/28/17 2:07pm Roberto:

That sounds about right. I grew up largely in the SF Valley, so to me it will always be a giant honkin' freeway. So to speak.
Avatar Fri. 4/28/17 2:08pm geezerette:

My god Dean, you're right! I've NEVER seen one. ANYWHERE.
Avatar Fri. 4/28/17 2:09pm Lane Gray:
