Favoriting Hinky Dinky Time with Uncle Michael: Playlist from February 3, 2017 Favoriting

Uncle Michael's avatar View Uncle Michael's profile Favoriting

Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

"Goat's Head Soup" is a great record when I want to feel my heart hurt in a good way.
"Tattoo You" is for dancing and nostalgia.

they did "my girl"?

The best cover that is Stones associated (to me) is the Jagger/Tosh version of Don't Look Back.
It's All Over Now from early Stones is quite good (but, the original is better (Valentinos)

"Birthday"? I never quite got the Cheap Trick/Beatles connection (other than the "Taxman" verbal allusion), but seems to me "Birthday" is a very Cheap Trick-ish Beatles tune.

Fabs' 'KansasCity' to me is a high-energy vocal tour-de-force. Paul can sound less than genuine, but vocally outstanding, whether ballads or screamers...Sometimes wonder if loving TheBeatles is cultural programming - or if it really is all there - but if the former it's too late for me...I can burn out on them for a bit, but it never lasts...

The thing with Beatles covers is that, at the time they were putting those albums out, they mostly still *were* a cover band, a bar band expected to play stuff the customers would know. I note that the Stones' first album is all covers too. While the Stones still did the occasional cover after they became huge, I don't think the F4 ever did.

TheStones thot themselves Blues/R&B) Purists - & didn't even try to write till TheBeatles made it clear there was no choice. Then they wrote great stuff! TheBeatles had been a super-hard-working Club Band. TheBeatles stopped putting covers on their albums altogether by 'RubberSoul' (late '65) - & they soon entered their Studio Only period (they were two bands - one Live & one Experimental thru '66 - but 'Revolver' was - well - the Revolving point...)

John, every time I'd seen Emmylou she seemed uncomfortable as a front. Whether it was my dad's band in the 80s or when she was in front of John Starling's band (she used them for her band around 2007)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:41pm

RR, it is a matter of taste too, of course; and i also was raised on the beatles so i cannot be completely objective. i just hear Paul, who's roots were not r&r but shmaltzy pop, trying to rock unconvincingly on that, and long tall sally, and a few others. George's roll over and John's R&R were more convincing.

TheBeatles' covers tended *dif* from the originals - straight g-b-d-v, for one thing. There's no supernova of energy like LittleRichard, granted! They were already Original in that sense...& natural geniuses of Arrangement. (Their Carl Perkins Rawkabilly was maybe more faithful...) Crucial! I use to think EarlyBeatles was before Pop & Rock separated - maybe true in a way - but they were actually their own Fusion from the start...

Thx UM ! 'Time you enjoyed wasting wasn't wasted.' - Lennon
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:01pm
Lane Gray:

Here's my take on Beatles doing covers v. their originals:
If you listen for the emotive load of the songs, they sang their own songs as if they were feeling the story; they sang and played covers as if their primary emotion was "I love this song!"
So you don't feel they're feeling the song. NEITHER WERE THEY. Just dig the song because they did.
