Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

I can see it now. Cats can be cruel, playing with what they catch for hours before killing and eating it.
Avatar Fri. 8/16/13 12:13pm Uncle Michael:

I think I'm together, shit-wise.
Avatar Fri. 8/16/13 12:15pm pacific standard simon:

Hello all you boo'ful people. How are you?
Avatar Fri. 8/16/13 12:19pm pacific standard simon:

The further back you go in the Bee Gees catalog, the better they get. They must have been god-like before they recorded.
Avatar Fri. 8/16/13 12:20pm Jeff Golick:

@pss, you're all over the place, avi-wise today.
Avatar Fri. 8/16/13 12:22pm Jeff Golick:

Oop, never mind. You're all in sync now, @pss. For a brief shining moment you were showing as two different images.

Avatar Fri. 8/16/13 12:23pm pacific standard simon:

Likely to be a third. Need something new.
Avatar Fri. 8/16/13 12:25pm pacific standard simon:

I know that story about Chet.
Avatar Fri. 8/16/13 12:27pm Uncle Michael:

What's the story, Simon?
Avatar Fri. 8/16/13 12:30pm Uncle Michael:

This is from a truly remarkable TEF album.
Avatar Fri. 8/16/13 12:33pm Uncle Michael:

Whole album is Ernie with just bass and guitar...John Mosher and Billy Strange
Avatar Fri. 8/16/13 12:33pm pacific standard simon:

The one about Chet trying to score drugs in San Francisco's Filmore district and getting punched in the mouth so hard that he had to quit playing his horn until he could get major dental work done? That story?
Avatar Fri. 8/16/13 12:35pm pacific standard simon:

I always come away from this show wanting a bunch of albums I never heard before.
Avatar Fri. 8/16/13 12:36pm pacific standard simon:

I have my tea now; the light at the end of the tunnel has appeared.
Avatar Fri. 8/16/13 12:40pm hyde:

yeah, I have to look for that Tenn. Ernie rec too. Never heard that one.
Avatar Fri. 8/16/13 12:41pm Uncle Michael:

Sorry about the messed up Topeka Hartte file.
Avatar Fri. 8/16/13 12:42pm hyde:

@pss my problem is that all of the shows I listen to regularly at FMU make me want all these albums I didn't know about, and I don't have enough money to keep up
Avatar Fri. 8/16/13 12:43pm listener james from westwood:

hey, it wasn't as messed up as chet's teeth!
Avatar Fri. 8/16/13 12:44pm pacific standard simon:

Money isn't the answer to every problem, if you know what I mean.
Avatar Fri. 8/16/13 12:45pm hyde:

@pss your ideas intrigue me and I wish to subscribe to your newsletter
Avatar Fri. 8/16/13 12:48pm pacific standard simon:

OK, this set is already making me happy.
Avatar Fri. 8/16/13 12:48pm Uncle Michael:

I know what you mean, Simon...nudge-wink.

I didn't know the Chet story.
Avatar Fri. 8/16/13 12:48pm Jeff Golick:

Hellooooooooooo, kitty!
Avatar Fri. 8/16/13 12:55pm pacific standard simon:

For a good time, search Google Images for Hello Kitty. Just sayin'...
Avatar Fri. 8/16/13 12:58pm Uncle Michael:

But...I'm already having a good time!
Avatar Fri. 8/16/13 12:59pm pacific standard simon:

Oh, me too, Uncle Michael -- all I REALLY need is your show.

Avatar Fri. 8/16/13 1:10pm Jeff Golick:

Nice Shulgin ref you snuck in there, UM.
Avatar Fri. 8/16/13 1:12pm Uncle Michael:

I read it eons ago.
Avatar Fri. 8/16/13 1:13pm Jeff Golick:

I gather he's not doing so well nowsabout.
Avatar Fri. 8/16/13 1:14pm Uncle Michael:

I hadn't heard.
Avatar Fri. 8/16/13 1:14pm listener james from westwood:

brian, i'll put that up against nutrasweet any old day.
Avatar Fri. 8/16/13 1:16pm βrian:

When I was waiting tables, I was sometimes asked for Equal. "I'm sorry," I replied. "I have no Equal."
Avatar Fri. 8/16/13 1:18pm Uncle Michael:

I am without Equal.
Avatar Fri. 8/16/13 1:19pm Uncle Michael:

Bo sure can fling the bullshit.
  Fri. 8/16/13 1:19pm Robert:

Aw, darn, just looked at the playlist now. I was hoping to learn the Schaefer beer jingle was originally something with a previous name & different lyrics that they just adapted to a jingle. Kind of like when I heard "Drink Me" announced as the source of the Mr. Softee jingle, and assumed it was an old European folk tune, only to learn the next time it was played that that was the band name playing Songs For Ice Cream Trucks.
Avatar Fri. 8/16/13 1:20pm pacific standard simon:

Now here's a musical marriage that should've lasted longer. Imagine Bo with TWO maraca players! Bo probably hated Phil's bass style, though.
Avatar Fri. 8/16/13 1:22pm Uncle Michael:

Phil sounds great on this!

That wasn't Schaeffer, Robert.
Avatar Fri. 8/16/13 1:23pm Uncle Michael:

I can't plug existing, fantasy advertisers.
Avatar Fri. 8/16/13 1:23pm Uncle Michael:

That's why I can't tell you that was the Schlitz jingle.

  Fri. 8/16/13 1:24pm Robert:

Darn, you're right, I meant to write "Schlitz".

Then there was the time on WQXR the DJ (wasn't Steve Post) announced cuts from a record as being of Baroque tunes, causing the audience to marvel at how old the originals to tunes like "Erie Canal" were before he finally revealed the hoax, explaining that it was arrangements of more recent stuff in Baroque, etc. style.
  Fri. 8/16/13 1:24pm Robert:

Come to think of it, it wouldn't even scan right if it was "When you're out of Schaefer....:
Avatar Fri. 8/16/13 1:26pm Uncle Michael:

"When your down to Schlitz, you're out of beer."
  Fri. 8/16/13 1:26pm Robert:

And then there was the time I played my grandparents' Yugoslav records for company, only to learn from my friends that one cut was "Buffalo Gals" in Croatian.
Avatar Fri. 8/16/13 1:29pm pacific standard simon:

I don't disagree with your appreciation of Phil Lesh's playing, but sometimes these old R'n'B guys can have a problem with the modern bass styles with lots of fiddly bits.
Avatar Fri. 8/16/13 1:33pm Alex In Illinois:

Schlitz is long gone, right? The last few times I have had to drive North of the Chedder Curtain to the Milkaukee area, I have seen that what was once the Schlitz brewery is either gone, or something else.

Does anyone remember the Schlitz Malt Liquor ad with Rufus Thomas? Hey! I found it onYoutube:
Avatar Fri. 8/16/13 1:34pm Uncle Michael:

Schlitz is owned by Miller now and has revived "Classic 1960's Formula" which is really pretty good slamming beer and what I'm having right now.
Avatar Fri. 8/16/13 1:35pm pacific standard simon:

"From the land of sky-blue waters,
Comes the beer refreshing..."

Hamms? I forget.
Avatar Fri. 8/16/13 1:35pm Uncle Michael:

Yes, I know that ad well!
Avatar Fri. 8/16/13 1:35pm Uncle Michael:

hamms is still terrible.
Avatar Fri. 8/16/13 1:37pm pacific standard simon:

I've had good luck with most Pyramid varieties, and Sierra Nevada as well.
Avatar Fri. 8/16/13 1:38pm listener james from westwood:

loved the lovecraft!
iirc i first heard this VU track in freshman year of college, courtesy of a stone VU freak. used to claim everything past the mid-60s was inspired by the band or lou reed. i later tricked him into buying metal machine music.
Avatar Fri. 8/16/13 1:39pm listener james from westwood:

"suddenly rough hands gripped his package" meant something very different in those days
Avatar Fri. 8/16/13 1:40pm Uncle Michael:

There's a great live version of the Drifter that I should play one day. Lovecraft was pretty great. Dual lead vocalists...not two...dual. Unusual.
Avatar Fri. 8/16/13 1:41pm Jeff Golick:

IIRC, this VU cut has the vocals and music in two entirely different channels, so that if you pan to one side or the other, you can isolate either the words or the band.
Avatar Fri. 8/16/13 1:42pm pacific standard simon:

Why do I get the feeling that this is a recycled manuscript from Lou Reed's college years, and that he got an A- on it?
Avatar Fri. 8/16/13 1:42pm Uncle Michael:

it's true
Avatar Fri. 8/16/13 1:43pm pacific standard simon:

It's true, Jeff. I had a stereo with a broken channel.
  Fri. 8/16/13 1:43pm Waldo Jeffers:

My brain hurts
Avatar Fri. 8/16/13 1:49pm Jeff Golick:

Poor Waldo Jeffers.
Avatar Fri. 8/16/13 1:53pm pacific standard simon:

Oddly, my local microbrewery has NO product at all in the local grocery stores.
Avatar Fri. 8/16/13 1:55pm Uncle Michael:

Are they a very small operation?
Avatar Fri. 8/16/13 1:56pm listener james from westwood:

that's weird, simon, the first thing sierra nevada did when they were just starting up was to make sales calls to local package stores and bars.
Avatar Fri. 8/16/13 1:57pm pacific standard simon:

Now with Parks, money sometimes is the only answer to your problems. As far as I can tell, the only way for me to get a replacement for JUMP is to buy a very expensive collector's copy, or a digital copy from Amazon.
Avatar Fri. 8/16/13 1:58pm pacific standard simon:

Here's my boys:

Avatar Fri. 8/16/13 1:59pm Uncle Michael:

contact me off-comments, Simon
Avatar Fri. 8/16/13 1:59pm Doug Schulkind:

Leaving in 1/2 an hour to go retrieve our new dog from the shelter. We were thinking of calling the dog Ruby, since we all feel like we're crossing the rubicon.
Avatar Fri. 8/16/13 1:59pm Alex In Illinois:

How do you buy the beer if it is not in the grocery store? Does the microbrewery let you bring your own container, and fill that up each time?
Avatar Fri. 8/16/13 2:01pm Alex In Illinois:

So you are in Washington State. I recall a few weeks ago you mentioned picking up rotten apples, when the apples here in Illinios were not even ripe or full size yet. I wondered where you were that had the apples already rotten.
Avatar Fri. 8/16/13 2:02pm pacific standard simon:

Oh Ruby, don't do your business in town.
Avatar Fri. 8/16/13 2:03pm pacific standard simon:

Alex, they have their own taproom, and are available on tap all over the island. Probably on keg, too.
Avatar Fri. 8/16/13 2:05pm pacific standard simon:

I don't know what kind of apples they are, but they're smallish & sour, fit only for sauce, pies and cider. The pears are nowhere near ripe yet.
Avatar Fri. 8/16/13 2:05pm Alex In Illinois:

I see. That way, you have to leave the house whenever you want some.
Avatar Fri. 8/16/13 2:14pm Uncle Michael:

The next set will feature some of the rock.
Avatar Fri. 8/16/13 2:18pm Jeff Golick:

Is it just me, or have the cat and goose been slowly speeding up this whole time?
Avatar Fri. 8/16/13 2:20pm Doug Schulkind:

Goodbye Ruby poo day?
Avatar Fri. 8/16/13 2:21pm pacific standard simon:

Well, now that you've said something, Jeff, I'll be unable to NOT see it going faster.
Avatar Fri. 8/16/13 2:21pm Uncle Michael:

It's just them, Jeff. Good luck, Doug.
Avatar Fri. 8/16/13 2:22pm pacific standard simon:

@UM - What a lemon.
Avatar Fri. 8/16/13 2:22pm Uncle Michael:

Quite so, Simon!
Avatar Fri. 8/16/13 2:23pm Jeff Golick:

Oh, yeah: Happy Elvis' death day, everyone.
Avatar Fri. 8/16/13 2:23pm Uncle Michael:

watch out for head fakes
Avatar Fri. 8/16/13 2:24pm efd:

oh hello, Gasolin'!
Avatar Fri. 8/16/13 2:25pm Uncle Michael:

ed'd up fake endings!
Avatar Fri. 8/16/13 2:26pm Uncle Michael:

I can't think because I like the Kinks.
Avatar Fri. 8/16/13 2:26pm Uncle Michael:

I thought that would shake you out of your treehouse, Evan.
Avatar Fri. 8/16/13 2:27pm efd:

You thought correctly.
Avatar Fri. 8/16/13 2:28pm Jeff Golick:

I freakin' love this MC5 cut.
Avatar Fri. 8/16/13 2:28pm pacific standard simon:

This whole album is awesome. It helps that John Sinclair hated it, too.
Avatar Fri. 8/16/13 2:29pm pacific standard simon:

And the cat and duck seem to be rockin' out.
Avatar Fri. 8/16/13 2:29pm Alex In Illinois:

How did this song not become an anthem?
Avatar Fri. 8/16/13 2:31pm Alex In Illinois:

I mean the American Ruse. I wish I had heard it when I was a punk-rockin teen, and covered it.
Avatar Fri. 8/16/13 2:32pm Alex In Illinois:

Is the same Del Shannon that did Runaway?
Avatar Fri. 8/16/13 2:32pm Jeff Golick:

It's an anthem of mine, @Alex. Not the same thing, I realize.
Avatar Fri. 8/16/13 2:33pm Jeff Golick:

@pss: "It helps that John Sinclair hated it, too." If I could favorite this comment, I would.
Avatar Fri. 8/16/13 2:35pm pacific standard simon:

What, no Allen Lanier tribute today?
Avatar Fri. 8/16/13 2:36pm Uncle Michael:

Bring out your dead.
Avatar Fri. 8/16/13 2:36pm pacific standard simon:

Thank you, Jeff. I hope to be back to commenting on your show soon.
Avatar Fri. 8/16/13 2:37pm Uncle Michael:

it ain't fair, John Sinclair...
Avatar Fri. 8/16/13 2:44pm Jeff Golick:

Sweet, @pss, but no pressure. That's why the good lord created archives, after all.
Avatar Fri. 8/16/13 2:45pm Uncle Michael:

Max Frost
Avatar Fri. 8/16/13 2:47pm pacific standard simon:

What's next, Lancelot Link and The Evolution Revolution?
Avatar Fri. 8/16/13 2:48pm Uncle Michael:

Not necessarily.
Avatar Fri. 8/16/13 2:49pm pacific standard simon:

The great thing about imaginary bands is that you don't have to see them old and creepy and dead.
Avatar Fri. 8/16/13 2:51pm Uncle Michael:

Have you seen the Banana Splits lately? It's sad.
Avatar Fri. 8/16/13 2:51pm pacific standard simon:

As you say, there are no guilty pleasures, so I'll just say that I like this song.
Avatar Fri. 8/16/13 2:52pm Jeff Golick:

I had a Lancelot Link coloring book as a kid. Oh, here it is! $40 on ebay: www.ebay.com...
Avatar Fri. 8/16/13 2:52pm Dominick:

That was a kick ass version of Paxton Quigley
Avatar Fri. 8/16/13 2:52pm pacific standard simon:

No, but I saw Mickey Dolenz in that Nilsson doc -- and I have to say that The Monkees were not imaginary enough.
Avatar Fri. 8/16/13 2:54pm pacific standard simon:

Can you imagine how much it would be worth if someone had COLORED in it?!
Avatar Fri. 8/16/13 2:57pm Uncle Michael:

The Monkees were only slightly more imaginary than the Grass Roots.
Avatar Fri. 8/16/13 3:00pm listener james from westwood:

is the seller of that comic book dave the spazz? of course not; he'd never let it get away!
thanks a ton for the mighty program, uncle michael!
Avatar Fri. 8/16/13 3:00pm pacific standard simon:

Where did I read that story about the Grass Roots' singer-of-the-moment beating Jim Morrison & Iggy to the punch by playing with his willy on stage?
Avatar Fri. 8/16/13 3:02pm Uncle Michael:

That's gotta be worth a star on a sidewalk right there.
Avatar Fri. 8/16/13 3:02pm pacific standard simon:

There's a lovely documentary about Transformer on Netflix streaming.
Avatar Fri. 8/16/13 3:03pm Uncle Michael:

Avatar Fri. 8/16/13 3:04pm Jeff Golick:

Thanks for the tunes and 'toons, UM!
Great weekend to one and all.
Avatar Fri. 8/16/13 3:04pm pacific standard simon:

These foolish things remind me of you, Lou.
Avatar Fri. 8/16/13 3:06pm pacific standard simon:

You'll be hearing from me, UM.
Avatar Fri. 8/16/13 3:06pm Brian in UK:

Hello Uncle Michael. I missed Motorcycle Irene. Goodbye too. Bugger
