there seems to have been a decision at new york's cbs 101.1 to redefine "oldies." it's no longer "stuff from the era of 'american graffiti." not sure if a similar creep has occurred on the so-called classic rock stations in the area. all i know is nyc music radio, outside of wfmu, is a bleak prospect. (inside of wfmu it's quite lovely.)

"Classic Rock?" "Oldies?" Doesn't commercial broadcast radio choose a demographic of the population that has money to spend, then decide which kinds of things it will advertize, then figure out what kind of music to play to bring the listeners to the commercials? Then, maybe they hire PR firms to come up with those labels or redefine them or something like that.

Call me old-fashioned, but the progression goes: "moldy oldies"=pre-rock, "oldies"=pre-Beatles rock, "classic rock"=Beatles through Nixon resignation rock. Anything later is just myriad itty-bitty sub-genres.
