Good to hear Gary Shandling samples....

Avatar Wed. 11/8/17 5:26pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Fripp feels alive to me
Avatar Wed. 11/8/17 5:27pm northguineahills:

Yes, Fripp is still alive, b/c WFMU would implode for a few days. Woofmoo is my reality to me.
Avatar Wed. 11/8/17 5:29pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

It takes time to fall in love, but it's inevitable
Avatar Wed. 11/8/17 5:34pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Hi, folks. I had an idea last week that I meant to post on Station Manager Ken's show this morning, but this may be a good a place as any to toss it out: WFMU ringtones. I thought it'd be cool to be able to download from 4 or 5 choices. When your phone rings, any 'FMU listeners in the vicinity could identify another listener.
Avatar Wed. 11/8/17 5:34pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

"A weekly touchstone of unreality amid hard reality."
Avatar Wed. 11/8/17 5:34pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

You want a 2-hour ringtone, I've got a few
Avatar Wed. 11/8/17 5:35pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Daft Punk, Alan Parsons, David Lynch, Moebius/Story/Leidecker
Avatar Wed. 11/8/17 5:36pm northguineahills:

I like the idea, but my phone is always on mute, I've never had a ringtone, or any tones.
Avatar Wed. 11/8/17 5:36pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

, Robert Fripp's rejected Vista theme
Avatar Wed. 11/8/17 5:37pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

, Peep Show actor talking about Vista the way many tens of thousands feel about XP
Avatar Wed. 11/8/17 5:42pm northguineahills:

I remember nearly every dream. I still remember dreams from when I was 4 years-old.
Avatar Wed. 11/8/17 5:43pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

I generally only remember my dreams right before I fall back asleep the next night
Avatar Wed. 11/8/17 5:45pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Play against your type
Avatar Wed. 11/8/17 5:45pm Bliss:

Was 2000 the first year you had your own website?
Avatar Wed. 11/8/17 5:46pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Avatar Wed. 11/8/17 5:47pm Bliss:

Then this one starting in 2000?
Avatar Wed. 11/8/17 5:47pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

In 1993 I made a website which had a color scan of my hand. In early 1994 I created my radio show site and also a huge growing list of links to other sites.
Avatar Wed. 11/8/17 5:48pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

The KenzoDB thingy I made that WFMU uses I launched in 2000, yes.
Avatar Wed. 11/8/17 5:48pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

In 1995 I made an automated online version of a bi-weekly newspaper I managed, and also co-created a radio station website.
Avatar Wed. 11/8/17 5:49pm Webhamster Henry:

WFMU's site started as a gopher site on ECHO, and eventually the gopher became part of WFMU's web offerings. Before KenzoDb, I hand formatted a whole lot of playlists here.
Avatar Wed. 11/8/17 5:50pm Rich in Washington:

I got lost in stupid work situations again.
Avatar Wed. 11/8/17 5:50pm Webhamster Henry:

There are still primordial bits of the pre-Kenzo WFMU site sitting around in deep links!
Avatar Wed. 11/8/17 5:50pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Perfect timing, Rich...you're here right when you were here last night!
Avatar Wed. 11/8/17 5:50pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Yes, Henry's marks are all over here
Avatar Wed. 11/8/17 5:51pm Rich in Washington:

just in time for my horrid beige phone interface.
Avatar Wed. 11/8/17 5:52pm Webhamster Henry:

The two letter archive codes for shows were things I made up so they'd sort nicely on my NeXT.
Avatar Wed. 11/8/17 5:53pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Rich, it was great! Felt like the Museum of Natural History's 70's-era gems and minerals exhibit that just closed 2 weeks ago
Avatar Wed. 11/8/17 5:54pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

I still regret not having tried harder to talk Ken out of keeping 2-letter codes
Avatar Wed. 11/8/17 5:55pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

"We can save each other"
Avatar Wed. 11/8/17 5:55pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

"It's not too late"
Avatar Wed. 11/8/17 5:55pm northguineahills:

My first email was prodigy, back in 1989. I only emailed a friend of mine a few times, and the novelty wore off, as no one else had email. It wasn't until 1993 that I actually started using it again, and then I went to college, where the university gave us a free accountwas mostly used to communicate w/ my professors and classmates. Damn, I was boring. I didn't even make a website until '98 (again, for academic purposes). I found WFMU online in '98 and only my work could handle the tinny sound, so, when I worked late, I would listen to WFMU. Two years later, I would be able to listen terrestrially.
Avatar Wed. 11/8/17 5:56pm Rich in Washington:

I just need to fix that static problem. It's intermittent and somewhat infuriating. Otherwise, it has pretty good fidelity. The other minus, it being such an old phone, there's no speed dial or memory. I must manually redial, like in the old days.
Avatar Wed. 11/8/17 5:56pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

I started emailing around 1981. BBS'ing around 1982. Internet emailing starting in 1985
Avatar Wed. 11/8/17 5:56pm Ken From Hyde Park:

I like how the Unix has little two-character commands (rm ls mv, etc.). It's annoying to try to memorize and type out stuff like copyOldFileToNewPlace kind of stuff.
Avatar Wed. 11/8/17 5:57pm Bliss:

In 1984 I sat down at a computer in the University library. black screen, green letters with the book catalogue on it. "no big deal" I thought and didn;t go online until 2000.
Avatar Wed. 11/8/17 5:58pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Sure is easy to find the Drummer stream here! freeform.wfmu.org
Avatar Wed. 11/8/17 5:59pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

I first launched Mosaic on a Sun workstation in 1993 and thought, whoa, this is a significant leap up from Gopher. I remember being flooded by how obvious it was it was going to change everything.
Avatar Wed. 11/8/17 5:59pm Bliss:

That sire is nice, in a way.
Avatar Wed. 11/8/17 6:00pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

I still have my printed modem chat logs from the late 70's
Avatar Wed. 11/8/17 6:00pm Rich in Washington:

I don't think I ever got online, and then intermittently, until 1995 or so. Then limited internet via my job, but didn't own a computer capable of really getting online myself until 1998 or 1999 or so.
Avatar Wed. 11/8/17 6:00pm Bliss:

Avatar Wed. 11/8/17 6:02pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

I had a dumb terminal discarded by someone I used to go online throughout the 80's. Discarded modems, too...110 baud giant thing, 300, 1200 Hayes, 2400, 9600, 19.2 USR...
Avatar Wed. 11/8/17 6:03pm Webhamster Henry:

I had WWW on the NeXT (the first browser), and it predated <FORM> and <TABLE> tags. When those showed up .. and the idea that you didn't need reciprocal links, which was a key part of Ted Nelson's concept of hypertext, the web started weaving.
Avatar Wed. 11/8/17 6:04pm Webhamster Henry:

Before there were search engines, Panix used to have an internet search contest. You'd have to pull lists of files off of FTP servers, dig around UUnet, etc.
Avatar Wed. 11/8/17 6:04pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

I remember when table appeared too
Avatar Wed. 11/8/17 6:06pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Missed my Shmoocon ticket round by 30 seconds
Avatar Wed. 11/8/17 6:06pm Webhamster Henry:

TABLE and FRAME were miracles! my Internet Synthesizer (which is still running, but not on WFMU) has a special "netscape torture page" which was a table that has so many fields on it, it would really gum up Netscape.
Avatar Wed. 11/8/17 6:09pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

My webpage used to force Netscape to generate an email msg back to me. So I knew who was looking
Avatar Wed. 11/8/17 6:11pm Webhamster Henry:

WFMU was streaming by uploading its signal to a satellite, bouncing it down to Texas, where it would be netcast by audionet! www.wfmu.org...
Avatar Wed. 11/8/17 6:11pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Love those pages

Avatar Wed. 11/8/17 6:26pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Henry, I love that those pages are still there
Avatar Wed. 11/8/17 6:27pm Rich in Washington:

I love this Lynch album. And that Hurley sources album. I was just listening to both of them very loudly while cooking dinner last night.
Avatar Wed. 11/8/17 6:30pm Doug Schulkind:

I like the old wfmu.org better. There, I said it.
Avatar Wed. 11/8/17 6:30pm Webhamster Henry:

Thanks Kenzo! The old WFMU front page is still around at freeform.wfmu.org incase you want to see what's playing on the drummer stream without needing to click to it! Complete with the soundbite of the day!
Avatar Wed. 11/8/17 6:31pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Ahhh so easy
Avatar Wed. 11/8/17 6:31pm Webhamster Henry:

Doug made his own playlist pages - full of imagery!
Avatar Wed. 11/8/17 6:31pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Implementing Doug's style in KenzoDB was super fun. wfmu.org...
Avatar Wed. 11/8/17 6:33pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Roxy Music time-stretched, phone phreaking, David Lynch still playing, was a bit of OCDJ
Avatar Wed. 11/8/17 6:34pm Doug Schulkind:

Kenzo db was so remarkable in the way it was flexible enough to incorporate so many different styles within its basic template.
Avatar Wed. 11/8/17 6:36pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

I made a trip to Doug's home to show him how to use those features I made him
Avatar Wed. 11/8/17 6:36pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

'cause he's an important DJ for the world
Avatar Wed. 11/8/17 6:37pm Doug Schulkind:

And then, following the transitive property: if Kenzo = Kenzo db, and Kenzo db = remarkable, then...

Kenzo = remarkable
Avatar Wed. 11/8/17 6:37pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Shoot I should've played the It's Garry Shandling's Show theme in this episode, with all this Garry Shandling/Tom Petty together sampling
Avatar Wed. 11/8/17 6:39pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Umm I don't know how to name today's episode
Avatar Wed. 11/8/17 6:39pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

It's so unstructuredly dreamlike
Avatar Wed. 11/8/17 6:40pm steve:

lol Gary Shandling was an ee student
Avatar Wed. 11/8/17 6:41pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

It's crazy the Archive of American Television sat on this interview until after he died
Avatar Wed. 11/8/17 6:41pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Should've dug up that thing where Garry and Sharon Stone chat. He did great wistful nostalgia co-interviews
Avatar Wed. 11/8/17 6:42pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Garry Shandling said he got lucky

Avatar Wed. 11/8/17 6:46pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Avatar Wed. 11/8/17 6:47pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Avatar Wed. 11/8/17 6:49pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Lotta people told me right after the show that they almost called but didn't have the courage. Courage! That indicates people are thinking. Gotta give that up and just start
Avatar Wed. 11/8/17 6:51pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

What if this is the last show I ever do? What if I turn it in...
Avatar Wed. 11/8/17 6:53pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

This idea of having just one playlist and never closing it, with all the cuts listed and a continuous chat might be something other DJs would like.

Avatar Wed. 12/5/18 5:59pm βrian:

I've never napped at my desk, but I do recall nipping once or twice back in the day.
Avatar Wed. 12/5/18 6:00pm northguineahills:

Wait, I know Sawako, I'm friends w/ her!
Avatar Wed. 12/5/18 6:01pm Carmichael:

Heya Kenzo and explorers.
Avatar Wed. 12/5/18 6:01pm northguineahills:

I've napped at every job I've had, every master, undergrad and HS class (and that includes symphonic/marching band, and PE.

I'm like the girl in The Ring. I NEVER sleep.

Trying to imagine a marching band member napping during practice ...

I'm friends with some folks in today too
Avatar Wed. 12/5/18 6:04pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

I was in such a dismal mood before this show began, now I'm flying to I don't know where it is but it's like this
Avatar Wed. 12/5/18 6:04pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Hi, Rich, Rand, ngh, Brian, Carmichael!
Avatar Wed. 12/5/18 6:07pm northguineahills:

βrian: It used to be an artform I was good at.

Carmichael: That's the problem, i went 3+ years w/ never more then 2-3 hours of sleep at a time, but by last month, I started to sleep more and more, and now it's like my body wants to make up for the cumulative lack of sleep. My brain is finally working again (when awake).
Avatar Wed. 12/5/18 6:07pm Rich in Washington:

You're flying, Kenzo!
Avatar Wed. 12/5/18 6:08pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

This Philip Glass still makes me think of seeing Anima Mundi scored live at BAM, while also making me think of the only good scene in The Truman Show
Avatar Wed. 12/5/18 6:11pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

I miss sleep
Avatar Wed. 12/5/18 6:14pm northguineahills:

@Kenzo, if start to fall, just miss the ground, then you'll keep flying....
Avatar Wed. 12/5/18 6:16pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

I love Wobbly
Avatar Wed. 12/5/18 6:16pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Or "Moebius, Story, Leidecker" as it were
Avatar Wed. 12/5/18 6:17pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

ngh that is literally the activity I'll be experimenting with immediately after the show

and Matmos
Avatar Wed. 12/5/18 6:20pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

He's a swell guy, I first met during an Over the Edge broadcast I showed up for long long ago
Avatar Wed. 12/5/18 6:21pm northguineahills:

@chresti: I have that record (I could swear I saw Wobbly w/ Matmos, but I've seen Matmos so many times, I might be conflating different shows together in my mind.
Avatar Wed. 12/5/18 6:23pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Don Joyce was a sport, I showed up in the middle of the night during live show while on a cross-country drive that perfectly timed with OTE, gave him one sentence about myself and he let me right into the main studio to play. Met The Weatherman that night too.
Avatar Wed. 12/5/18 6:26pm Rich in Washington:

Wow, Kenzo! That's amazing!
Avatar Wed. 12/5/18 6:28pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

The Stereo Microphone Show
Avatar Wed. 12/5/18 6:30pm Rich in Washington:

Wobbly/Leidecker is a great guy. Recently attended a 360 degree audio collage performance he did here in PDX. Got to chat with him briefly. Also produced a live radio remote Negativland show with Wobbly on board a couple of years ago.
I love what he's doing with OTE. It's like Don's OTE yet very different.
Avatar Wed. 12/5/18 6:30pm Webhamster Henry:

I built one of those Negativland interface boxes to connect my audio system to phone lines, and used it during the WFMU-WKCR Radio War in 1996.
Avatar Wed. 12/5/18 6:31pm Rich in Washington:

I've always wanted to make one of those, WH.

The Phone Show!
Avatar Wed. 12/5/18 6:34pm Rich in Washington:

I found The Microphone Show. I will listen to it later and imagine Kenzo being there.
Avatar Wed. 12/5/18 6:34pm βrian:

I wish I'd had some phreaking chops when I lived in France in pre-internet days. It was so *expensive* to call home.
Avatar Wed. 12/5/18 6:36pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

This was The Stereo Microphone Show.
Avatar Wed. 12/5/18 6:36pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

I called in even though I was there
Avatar Wed. 12/5/18 6:37pm Rich in Washington:

That's what I meant. The Stereo Microphone Show. I added it to my Archive.org favorites.
Avatar Wed. 12/5/18 6:37pm Rich in Washington:

You phoned it in. But in stereo!
Avatar Wed. 12/5/18 6:38pm Rich in Washington:

I really like The Weatherman's field recordings. And his drone music. He's really creative, yet vehemently denies it.
Avatar Wed. 12/5/18 6:38pm βrian:

Keep your cans to your ears and your phone lines taut.
Avatar Wed. 12/5/18 6:44pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

They got lucky (then they died)
Avatar Wed. 12/5/18 6:49pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

I seriously should add a field to the KDB playlists for artist death date
Avatar Wed. 12/5/18 6:50pm Carmichael:

Are we simply out of time?
Avatar Wed. 12/5/18 6:51pm Rich in Washington:

OMG, Kenzo! You KNOW that would get used!
Avatar Wed. 12/5/18 6:51pm Rich in Washington:

Maybe a little black skull icon for a dead artist and a little white ankh for a living artist.
Avatar Wed. 12/5/18 6:52pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Freshness color coding
Avatar Wed. 12/5/18 6:52pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

I'm adding it to my dream queue
Avatar Wed. 12/5/18 6:52pm Rich in Washington:

I'll never forget the sad, surreal experience of randomly listening to a WFMU show late one night - a show I didn't normally listen to - and learning via the chatboard of the passing of David Bowie.
Avatar Wed. 12/5/18 6:54pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

I can have it automatically check wikipedia for every artist at song play time
Avatar Wed. 12/5/18 6:54pm Rich in Washington:

the Ankh starts turning grey as the artist ages into their 70s/80s
Avatar Wed. 12/5/18 6:55pm Rich in Washington:

Oh, Kenzo! That's genius!
Avatar Wed. 12/5/18 6:55pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Hey, this show is turning grey. Thanks a whole lot for everyone being out of time with me
Avatar Wed. 12/5/18 6:55pm Rand al'Thor:

Thank you for the show.
Avatar Wed. 12/5/18 6:55pm Rich in Washington:

Thanks Kenzo! Gone!
Avatar Wed. 12/5/18 6:56pm Rich in Washington:

Glad you're back!
Avatar Wed. 12/5/18 6:56pm northguineahills:

Thanks Kenzo!
Avatar Wed. 12/5/18 6:56pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Avatar Wed. 12/5/18 7:02pm chresti:

Avatar Wed. 12/5/18 7:02pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Oops goodbye! Hear it again anytime.
Avatar Wed. 12/5/18 7:03pm chresti:

I always stay until the end!
