The film i remembered is "Alternative 3" from 1977. There are quite a few layers; it is a pretend documentary aired in the UK on April Fools, but about unusually important subjects that would become more and more relevant.
There are unique references to other films and the art of filmmaking, as well as being soundtracked by Brian Eno and containing very welcome and nonsequitorial references to Dovid Bowie.
