Bliss: Use VLC (www.videolan.org...) or Media Player Classic (mpc-hc.org) rather than the pain of Windows Media Player.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:13pm Rich in Washington:

VLC is amazing! I highly recommend it. It's the Swiss Army knife of media players.
Avatar 2:13pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

By the way, thanks everyone for being part of it last week. (Sing with katydids, lastever.org...) It was a beautiful and sad show. Fred has dibs on using it for his funeral.
Avatar 2:14pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

what's that my so-called life girl's name again?
  2:15pm Bliss:

Just downloaded VLC, but don't know how to use it.

my fault/problem.
Don't missout on the show folks.
I'll have to figure it out, or not.
Avatar 2:16pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

VLC can be confusing. Attempt to "Open" this Network URL: www.wfmu.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:17pm pacific standard simon:

I split between foobar2000 for audio and vlc for video. And various file conversion utilities for that kind of thing.
  2:17pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

I mean this URL: http://wfmu.org/wfmu_drummer.pls
Avatar 2:18pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Who here finds dish washing to be a completely transcendant experience?
  2:18pm Bliss:

Open with----does not offer the VLC option even though I just downloaded VLC
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:19pm pacific standard simon:

Probably have to restart to get an "open with" option.
  2:20pm Bliss:

shows my fucking computer ignorance.

pacific..., gonna do what you said.
Avatar 2:21pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Don't waste time on that. Find a way to launch VLC on its own, having nothing to do with the browser. Then Media->Open Network Stream->Paste that URL
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:22pm Rich in Washington:

@Bliss: if you download the wfmu stream m3u url, you can open it with VLC by going to 'file' > 'open file' or by copying the url and pasteing it in VLC via 'file'> 'open network' and paste url in url box
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:22pm Rich in Washington:

Whoops!
Kenzo beat me to it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:23pm pacific standard simon:

What Kenzo just wrote is correct.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:25pm Rich in Washington:

I need to watch Andre again. Haven't seen it since I was a teenager. I watched it because Siskel and Ebert told me to. Teenage me was somewhat intrigued, somewhat bored but I watched it because S&E told me it was important.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:25pm pacific standard simon:

I'm used to just clicking the URL, and foobar opening and playing automatically.
Avatar 2:26pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

@Rich: Me too, I hadn't seen it since I was a kid. I watched it recently and was blown away, this guy is talking about all the stuff I talk about now! I wasn't saying it yet when I was a kid. P.S. Doug has a great story about this movie; ask him.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:28pm Rich in Washington:

Siskel and Ebert were like these oracles telling me about all the movies I would never get to see - since I lived in the rural PNW - but that I should if I ever got the chance.
That was back long before the internet, where we heard about amazing stuff (read about it, etc) but wouldn't actually experience it for years.

Installed VLC, made it my choice in Open With and it opened fine and showed Ken's info and the volume button is up and on and yet no sound.
I give up, y'all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:31pm Rich in Washington:

@Bliss: popup player isn't working for you?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:31pm pacific standard simon:

I got turned into a night person at an early age because anything worth seeing or hearing was happening at a late night movie, or on an all-night radio show.
Avatar 2:31pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

The archive will be up by 4:30pm today!
@Rich: Popup player can be really taxing on older computers.
  2:32pm Bliss:

I see thewindow, the cone, the Ken info and the timergoing, but no sound.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:32pm pacific standard simon:

You haven't accidentally muted your speakers, have you?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:33pm Rich in Washington:

@Bliss - if you have an iPhone, you can also try WFMU's free app.
Avatar 2:33pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

@pss: Late night radio and TV were indeed very mysterious and often intangible back then.
Avatar 2:34pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Wow, this live playlisting is completely impossible. I'm glad I made a robot, even if he will eventually bury me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:35pm Rich in Washington:

@PSS: latenight freeform radio, weird magazines and fanzines and mailorder catalogs from Ralph Records and Rough Trade were my founts of cultural weirdness back in the day.
  2:35pm Bliss:

@Rich

Hahahhaha
What do you think are the chances that I have an iphone?

I give up.

Before I go, two things.

1) Washing dishes is cool by me.
2) What is the name of the movie y'all are talking about?
Andre?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:35pm pacific standard simon:

Avatar 3:01pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

If anyone hasn't figured it out, this is an unusual week in that I'm playing a show I already performed live previously. It never played here at WFMU before, nor ever made its way to the lastever.org archives.
Most weeks I would not dare to not be completely live on the air. But this is a recording of something that was completely live.
And now I'm desperately trying to make a playlist of it by ear which is a full-time job in itself.

(This show in May was originally scheduled to be four hours long. At the end I decided never to do shows again.)

I was on the ferry yesterday and the purser's mate (I think) came on the PA system to announce that a blood sugar testing device had been found in the galley. Three announcements, and no one claimed it.

I'm all and none of the above, below, and lateral.
  3:46pm Bliss:

and yet..you did shows again.
Avatar 3:46pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Because they'd passed out already? I remember visiting an emergency room because I'd lost my hearing. They called out my name after I'd waited for hours and I didn't hear them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:47pm pacific standard simon:

I visited my own grave in May -- where I expect to be someday. It's really nice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:48pm pacific standard simon:

They should've held up a sign, like at the airports.
Avatar 3:49pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

I left that place crying
  3:49pm Bliss:

I once visited my grandad's grave site with my grandad---and now he's buried there.
  3:51pm Bliss:

Ken, glad you got your hearing back.
Avatar 3:51pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

There really is no time for rushing
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:51pm pacific standard simon:

That's the thing -- cemeteries are so much healthier places than hospitals.

Nothing's plenty for me.

A friend explained to me the Arvo Pärt is thumb-sucking music. "But I like it," I replied.
Avatar 3:53pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

If you haven't heard the last few shows, I really recommend them. Last week's "Sing with katydids" (lastever.org...) had some fun calls throughout. "It's not going to stop" (lastever.org...) seemed important. "Other shapes are possible": Fish dances, before it's too late. (lastever.org...)

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:55pm pacific standard simon:

Avatar 3:55pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

and thumbs and sucking are good and important things
Avatar 3:55pm βrian:

Oh, I know. I'm wandering through the playlist that preceded my entry ...
Avatar 3:55pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

For sure, send me a sound postcard for the show
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:56pm pacific standard simon:

Fitting in four hours of comments because I might be working next week.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:50pm Doug Schulkind:

Had you streaming in the car until 3:55 when the connection via iPhone crapped out. Good news: I stayed awake. Bad news: My wife kept telling me to shush and not talk over Wally and Andre. Cheers!

Mollusk-y, meaty program, Kenzo!
@Kenzo @2:52pm: Ahh, The Conversation, yes. One of my top fave films of all time. Other C's: Chinatown, Citizen Kane, Charley Varrick, Cool Hand Luke, Clockwork Orange, etc.
@Rev. Turnip Druid: That is one frightened-looking rabbit. My Cabbit avatar says: It's all gonna be OK, really.
