Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

I'd post something, but I'm too hypnotized by that gif.
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 12:05pm duke:

Can't stop looking at that gif
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 12:05pm Rich in Washington:

Hey, Uncle Michael!
Lookin' forward to the show!
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 12:06pm Uncle Michael:

Welcome everyone.
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 12:06pm Matt from Springfield:

World class opening theme! Glad to hear it live!

Kick Out The Jams with time vertigo! Now THAT'S psych-punk!!
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 12:06pm Brian in UK:

Hello Uncle Michael. Nice to get a mention for Xinjiang.
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 12:07pm Uncle Michael:

Brian knows his geography!
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 12:08pm Brian in UK:

The thing with Chinese time even the so called semi autonomous states like Xinjiang and Tibet run on Beijing time.
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 12:09pm listener james from westwood:

howdy, uncle michael! agreed, a fab start to the show!
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 12:09pm pacific standard simon:

Kick out the mothers!
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 12:10pm Uncle Michael:

It seemed like a fairly cliche start till I found this extended version.
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 12:10pm Brian in UK:

Got anything by The Silk Road or The Turfan Depression?
You're cookin', UM.
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 12:11pm Doug Schulkind:

Like Willie Mays's glove and triples, Hinky Dinky Time is where clich├ęs go to die.
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 12:11pm Uncle Michael:

I'll make note of that suggestion for the coming weeks, Brian.
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 12:11pm pacific standard simon:

The Beat Club was really on a roll back in 72.
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 12:12pm Uncle Michael:

This id from 28 minutes of raw footage you can view on Youtube and I insist that you all do.
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 12:13pm Matt from Springfield:

@Brian: Really a band name? I love the actual Turpan Depression, actually the only thing I'd really really like to see out in Xinjiang:
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 12:14pm pacific standard simon:

I'll go huntin' -- one of my favorite internet treasures is that Beat Club appearance by Captain Beefheart.
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 12:14pm Matt from Springfield:

@Doug: Is that what they said about Willie Mays' glove - "where triples go to die?" :)
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 12:14pm Brian in UK:

Alex In Illinois will like the front page picture.
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 12:14pm Brian in UK:

@simon was that the beach party scene.
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 12:15pm pacific standard simon:

Huh? What are you smoking, Brian?
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 12:15pm Doug Schulkind:

@Matt from S
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 12:16pm Brian in UK:

@Matt was making up the band name but it is quite wonderous.
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 12:18pm Matt from Springfield:

@Doug: That's a good one!
@Brian: Being a geographer, I had discovered it quite by accident while looking at elevation data. Seeing the very high elevations on that steppe drop down to below sea level, I had to look up just what was at those coordinates. Boy was I wowed!

Peter Green Manalishi! Or, probably Post-Peter Green Manalishi...
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 12:19pm pacific standard simon:

No, that's Green's last stand.
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 12:19pm Uncle Michael:

That was Peter going all Syd on our asses.
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 12:22pm Matt from Springfield:

Mellow Stones jam, I like!
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 12:23pm Uncle Michael:

With extra Keef.
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 12:23pm pacific standard simon:

On Keith toast.
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 12:24pm northguineahills:

You know, I've somehow have never heard that Stones song in my lifetime until now.
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 12:24pm Matt from Springfield:

Makes a good sweet treat after the Goat's Head Soup.
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 12:25pm pacific standard simon:

I should dig out that first Nils Lofgren solo shot.
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 12:25pm Matt from Springfield:

@NGH: Remove "Stones" from that quote and replace with __, that summarizes why I love FMU so much!
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 12:26pm Brian in UK:

@simon this is what I was thinking of go to seven minutes.
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 12:29pm pacific standard simon:

Nope, Brian, that's much older. Go to youtube and search for Beefheart, Booglarize, and Beat Club. Full bore, full strength Magic Band.
  Fri. 7/26/13 12:32pm An User:

Great Song!
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 12:34pm Brian in UK:

@simon do not have a year to look at all the Beefheart clips. Take your word.

Albert Hammond what a great songwriter. English ofcourse.
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 12:35pm Alex In Illinois:

I remember this song from Kaptain Kangeroo. They used to show film footage of the Union Pacific Big Boy pulling a train across the Mojavi, with this song as the music.
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 12:37pm pacific standard simon:

@Brian Oh, it's the first thing that comes up.
@Alex I remember riding that train from LA to Denver in '63 -- it made a big impression on a wee lad.
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 12:41pm still b/p:

For some reason. every mention of Captain Kangaroo recently has spurred(!) laughing recollections of the neatly named villains in the program's Lariat Sam cartoon: Badlands Meanie and Bushwhack. Why is that?
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 12:43pm Sean B.:

Kicking out the jams for sure...hey now;Yessiree-bob!.
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 12:43pm Uncle Michael:

Hey Sean B!
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 12:44pm Uncle Michael:

I'm a Tom Terrific and Manfred man
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 12:45pm still b/p:

Manfred! He used to pass out all the time, right?
(Manfred man...IC What U did there.)
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 12:46pm Uncle Michael:

Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 12:46pm pacific standard simon:

There's a picture of me in jammies with a funnel on my head, which I have been told has something to do Tom Terrific.
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 12:47pm Uncle Michael:

It most certainly does.
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 12:50pm Doug Schulkind:

In a minute, I've got to get by the insurance adjustor to inspect the deer-damage.
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 12:52pm pacific standard simon:

Don't you lie to Uncle Michael, 'cause it makes him evil as a man can be.
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 12:54pm pacific standard simon:

Why didn't The Stones record this, dammit?!
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 12:56pm Alex In Illinois:

@Pacific standard time: YEs, the Tom Terrific animated cartoon on Captain Kangeroo. The hero wore his funnel-like "thinking-cap" which occasional shot smoke out the top - if I recall correctly.
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 12:59pm Uncle Michael:

Calling this song "Boogie" is nothing if not truth in advertising.
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 12:59pm pacific standard simon:

Carson? Who? I thought of a bunch of things when I heard the opening riff, but "Carson" wasn't one of them.
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 1:00pm Uncle Michael:

Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 1:00pm Uncle Michael:

Get thee to Discogs...is my best suggestion.
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 1:00pm Sean B.:

Hello Michael, You won me over today...;I like rock & roll & not too much else...;Thanx man.
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 1:01pm Parq:

Just a guess, but I'll bet "Boogie (Part 2)" sounds remarkably like this.
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 1:01pm Uncle Michael:

I play the rock and roll. Glad you're here.
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 1:02pm Sean B.:

I'm always here man
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 1:02pm listener james from westwood:

great capper to a fiery first hour!
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 1:02pm Uncle Michael:

In fact, Parq...this may actually be parts 1&2
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 1:02pm pacific standard simon:

Australian, says Wiki.
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 1:03pm Uncle Michael:

That is so.
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 1:03pm northguineahills:

Ok, off to lunch, see y'all later!
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 1:03pm pacific standard simon:

Continuing the Uncle Michael tradition of playing the best in fake ZZ Top!
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 1:04pm pacific standard simon:

...and I mean that in the nicest way.
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 1:05pm Uncle Michael:

Fake ZZ Tops from around the globe.
Fri. 7/26/13 1:09pm Pascal in Ann Arbor:

If you ever need to make a Canadian think it's 6:30 pm, all you need to do is play Curried Soul.
Fri. 7/26/13 1:11pm Pascal in Ann Arbor:

Not that I can think of any good reason that you'd need to convince a Canadian of such a thing...
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 1:12pm Stanley:

Hi Michael. A bit late joining in today on account of checking out the Emily album landing on my doormat today.
Love country yodellng, that's for sure.
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 1:13pm Stanley:

I wanted to be a hobo...just didn't have the self-discipline.
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 1:14pm listener james from westwood:

riddle me this, batman: was earl king the erl-king?
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 1:14pm Sean B.:

I think, if I'm not mistaken. that quote ="I like Rock & Roll and not too much" was an answer to a general "Hows your life going?" question to John Lennon from some maganzine.I always found that funny.
Fri. 7/26/13 1:15pm Pascal in Ann Arbor:

Huh, not sure where the NY Jets thing came from (or Sam, Erv and Tom for that matter)... should be Moe Kauffman, Curried Soul, no?
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 1:16pm Uncle Michael:

Not as far as I know, Pascal...but you have piqued my curiosity.
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 1:16pm pacific standard simon:

In my web search for my very own copy of Carson's 2 albums, I have been informed that I should refer to this type of music as "fake Canned Heat", not "fake ZZ Top". I suppose that's true, up to a point.
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 1:17pm hyde:

man, we listened to this eno/byrne record sooooo much in my dorm room
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 1:18pm Uncle Michael:

I wore this shit out back in the day too, Hyde.
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 1:18pm pacific standard simon:

in clouds of funny-smelling smoke, one assumes.
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 1:19pm hyde:

@pacific standard simon i can neither confirm nor deny that statement
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 1:19pm Stanley:

You couldn't see the other side of the room sometimes.
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 1:20pm duke:

I didn't inhale.
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 1:21pm pacific standard simon:

When Chris Montez came on, I thought of "Time After Time" -- then Byrne/Eno and I thought of the song with the line "doin' it again again again" -- what's next, Soft Machine?
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 1:22pm pacific standard simon:

I huffed and I puffed.
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 1:23pm pacific standard simon:

Pico and Sepulveda
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 1:23pm Uncle Michael:

You can't do a little cuz you can't do enough.
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 1:24pm Alex In Illinois:

I played the hell out of Bush of Ghosts in the 80's too. But I never did it while high. I think I might have played that record for other people who were high though.
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 1:24pm efd:

Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 1:25pm Rich in Washington:

WHat the hell!
What a freaky song!
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 1:25pm pacific standard simon:

You woke up Evan!
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 1:25pm Uncle Michael:

Let's see that fare, Evan.
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 1:27pm efd:

I like to think of funky bus fare as more of an abstract concept.
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 1:27pm efd:

(That philosophy does not apply to regular buses.)
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 1:28pm Uncle Michael:

I'll buy that.
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 1:30pm pacific standard simon:

Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 1:37pm pacific standard simon:

Relax, kick back, put on a Grateful Dead jam!
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 1:38pm Uncle Michael:

Don't tempt me.
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 1:41pm pacific standard simon:

Next time you do a 6 hour show -- heh heh...
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 1:42pm Uncle Michael:

fer sher
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 1:45pm listener james from westwood:

george should have signed on with the rock island line.
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 1:46pm Uncle Michael:

Is that a good line?
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 1:50pm pacific standard simon:

@james - come on, man, pick up your queues!
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 1:51pm Uncle Michael:

Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 1:54pm pacific standard simon:

Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 1:55pm Uncle Michael:

Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 1:55pm pacific standard simon:

There... the suspense, it was killing me.
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 1:59pm Stanley:

Digging the show UM but have to split and look busy. The wife's arrived
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 2:01pm Uncle Michael:

See ya Stanley...thanks.
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 2:04pm Matt from Springfield:

McGoohan's Blues! Luv luv LUV this!
Love Roy Harper in general, but Irwin once played this whole 20 min track to open the show, amazing critique of virtually everything in '69 society.
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 2:05pm Matt from Springfield:

Goodbye ol' Stanley, have a good gig!
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 2:06pm Uncle Michael:

This is the whole 18 minute version.
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 2:06pm Matt from Springfield:

Wooo! Whole 20 +/- 2 minute version! ;)
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 2:08pm Matt from Springfield:

Mum's favourite pop star forces a smile - says "He's a smash!"
Obliging the soft-headed viewers to act just as *flash*.

Great rhyme, I'm prob liking it for its extra Britannic content ;)
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 2:10pm Uncle Michael:

Do you think he memorized the words to this?
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 2:10pm listener james from westwood:

sorry, lads, was away from the screen! simon, thanks for calling back the line, both literal and lyrical.
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 2:16pm Matt from Springfield:

@UM: Hmm, if he ever performed this live, probably so. But if I was trying to record this in one take, I'd keep the lyrics sheet in front of me just to be safe.
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 2:25pm Matt from Springfield:

Ah, Jake Holmes! He also wrote Genuine Imitation Life Gazette with the Four Seasons; interesting how he brought psychedelic touches to all these established vocalists.

I first heard of that from Clay Pigeon and some other FMU personalities, bought the CD online and was pleased by what I heard. Didn't find its audience in '69, but good to know it is appreciated more each year.
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 2:26pm Matt from Springfield:

The Cyrkle--perhaps Brian Epstein's only US band. Not surprisingly opened for the Beatles on their '66 "Bigger Than Jesus?!" tour.
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 2:26pm Uncle Michael:

Which, the Sinatra or the Four Seasons?
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 2:28pm Matt from Springfield:

Well, I first heard Sinatra's "Lady Day" from you, just now! :)
But GILG I heard about from Clay P.

Now, Bob Gaudio's "Watertown" I haven't heard, but I like Jake Holmes so I'd give that a try.
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 2:29pm Rich in Washington:

This is a great show, Michael!
Been happily listening away from my computron, it being the soundtrack to me assembling collating. and binding books
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 2:30pm Rich in Washington:

I was disappointed when I learned Watertown wasn't about amphibious people trying to survive in a watery world.
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 2:30pm Uncle Michael:

I'm happy you're here paying me compliments, Rich...oh, and listening too.

Thanks Unca Michael!
OH HELLS YEAH! Unca Jazzbo!!!
