Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 4/9/19 3:04pm doctorjazz:

Big Richard (and Linda) fan, great start! Saw him some months back ,solo acoustic, what a guitarist and performer! Hi David and riders!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 4/9/19 3:04pm David D:

Hey Sem and Doc!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 4/9/19 3:04pm David D:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 4/9/19 3:07pm steveo:

hello, lovely piece that one
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 4/9/19 3:09pm David D:

Indeed it is and hello there, steveo!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 4/9/19 3:14pm steveo:

saw RT play last year in NYC with his band... he said that we'd probably all forgotten about fairport but he'd play a song anyway (sorry i forget which song)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 4/9/19 3:16pm David D:

Steveo, surely he was only being humorously modest.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 4/9/19 3:18pm steveo:

yes, but the crowd was also strangely unenthusiastic. oh dang i looked up the setlist and he did a 2nd encore which didn't seem like it would happen -- finished with the beatles' good night....
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 4/9/19 3:26pm Webhamster Henry:

Ooh a shoutout! Thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 4/9/19 3:26pm doctorjazz:

The last show I saw was a request show (at The City Winery), everybody submitted requests before the show, they went into a hat, and he played them (he had an assistant with a laptop who searched lyrics for him). Some were his tunes, others way out (he did The Beatles' And Your Bird Can Sing , which is not a solo acoustic tune . It was a really fun show (my 23 year old daughter loved it as well).
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 4/9/19 3:28pm steveo:

i have heard some of a city winery show from last year on WFUV -- was that the one? I'd like to hear his 'and your bird'
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 4/9/19 3:29pm David D:

Henry: When I said it was a great idea, I meant it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 4/9/19 3:31pm David D:

The idea being a countdown of the hits of 1968 - in all non-English cover versions, which will be next week's show...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 4/9/19 3:35pm steveo:

sounds like another can't miss
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 4/9/19 3:35pm doctorjazz:

Not sure which show WFUV broadcast.. Tbh, And Your Bird Can Sing wasn't perfect, but amazing anyway (who'd even attempt such a thing?), and it was great to hear it .
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 4/9/19 3:35pm steveo:

i think your show was 2016 maybe? the one i heard was at the end of last year with tracks from the new album
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 4/9/19 3:36pm Michael 98145:

really enjoying all this. thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 4/9/19 3:39pm David D:

Last week, there was a google doodle of Hugh Masekela in honor of his bday.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 4/9/19 4:09pm David D:

Nice that they thought of him, NGH.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 4/9/19 4:10pm doctorjazz:

This sounds so much more "Township" than some of the later stuff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 4/9/19 4:15pm fred:

I like the way the Tamasheq script looks
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 4/9/19 4:17pm David D:

Doctorjazz: He always had quite a range of musical style, in fact.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 4/9/19 4:18pm David D:

Fred: It is, in fact, looks very geometric, if that's the right word.
Avatar Tue. 4/9/19 4:32pm Sem:

Thanks for these Masekela cuts, DD. Good to be reminded of his work over the decades.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 4/9/19 4:34pm David D:

Avatar Tue. 4/9/19 5:57pm TDK60:

Hello. I see I missed a Thompson section.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 4/9/19 5:59pm doctorjazz:

Omer and avi are playing next week at the Princeton theater (McCarter), not that far from me kicking around going to see them (missed that track on the show, work got in the way)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 4/9/19 6:00pm chresti:

Still here, dozed off for awhile, due to an early day at work. Woke up when the train passed through South Africa
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 4/9/19 6:00pm chris:

tuning out now as well. thanks so much for a stellar show, David!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 4/9/19 6:02pm David D:

Thanks to Chris, Carmichael and everyone heading off...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 4/9/19 6:02pm David D:

And welcome TDK60!
Avatar Tue. 4/9/19 6:03pm northguineahills:

I was just wearing a Ben Chasny project tee yesterday (Comets on Fire).
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 4/9/19 6:04pm David D:

Doc, sounds like a good choice for a concert.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 4/9/19 6:04pm David D:

NGH: That is quite a t-shirt - and a coincidence.
Avatar Tue. 4/9/19 6:05pm TDK60:

Been going through a bit of a life change. I lived with my sister, her husband and five cats for ten years. They just moved out, I'm feeling separation blues when I see the empty part of the apartment.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 4/9/19 6:06pm fred:

I know I need to sleep (haven't recovered yet from Sonic Protest) but I also had a brisk 3.5km walk two hours ago and haven't completely cooled off from that
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 4/9/19 6:07pm David D:

TDK60: That sounds rough.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 4/9/19 6:09pm David D:

As long as I'm awake during the show, we're all good.
Avatar Tue. 4/9/19 6:09pm northguineahills:

@David: I'm finally fit enough to wear it for the first time in four years. (digging out all of my old tees).
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 4/9/19 6:10pm David D:

NGH: That is always a good feeling - enjoy those old shirts!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 4/9/19 6:11pm doctorjazz:

Really like this Kuhn group! (seen Omer Avital before, also have recordings, he's a really fine musician and composer)
Gotta go, catch you in the car.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 4/9/19 6:12pm David D:

Okay, here's another Kühn grouping - have a good ride home, Doc.
Avatar Tue. 4/9/19 6:13pm TDK60:

It's mainly positive; they found a fine house in the Jersey suburbs just miles away. All such life changes usually make me wistful.
Avatar Tue. 4/9/19 6:15pm Listening Out There:

Good show today. I'd seen Joachim Kühn's name, but hadn't had a chance to hear any of his stuff...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 4/9/19 6:20pm David D:

Thanks, LOT. Yes, there is much more to play of his as well, of course. Maybe another show sometime soon.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 4/9/19 6:21pm David D:

TDK60: I know what you mean. I suppose it will become your new normal sometime soon.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 4/9/19 6:21pm fred:

@David: How is the noise scene in Leipzig? I might have seen some people from there, but I usually don't pay much attention to where people are from
Avatar Tue. 4/9/19 6:22pm TDK60:

What is that structure in today's photograph?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 4/9/19 6:24pm David D:

Fred: You may know more about it than I do, then. Maybe if you mentioned a name...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 4/9/19 6:25pm Asheville Jon:

great set!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 4/9/19 6:25pm David D:

Thanks, Jon!
Avatar Tue. 4/9/19 6:28pm northguineahills:

I'm more of a Saxony-Anhalt guy myself....
Avatar Tue. 4/9/19 6:31pm TDK60:

Did you all hear Richard Thompson recently moved from L.A. to Montclair, NJ?
Avatar Tue. 4/9/19 6:33pm nostrangerer:

Thanks for the sounds today. Enjoyed a lot.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 4/9/19 6:34pm David D:

Thanks for checking in, nostrangerer!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 4/9/19 6:35pm chresti:

TDK60, you have any cats left?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 4/9/19 6:35pm fred:

@David: I just don't know. The place they come from isn't relevant to me. But I was wondering whether I might have met someone you know. I'll pay more attention in the future
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 4/9/19 6:35pm David D:

TDK60: I have official word from my wife, who took the picture (thanks!), that it is in fact an old piece of art. It is in another part of town that I don't get to a lot...
  Tue. 4/9/19 6:37pm Dean:

In the Fanfare magazine review of this recording of Brahms and Segerstam symphonies, Raymond Tuttle quotes the conductor/composer's mind-bending notes, then goes on:

"I have just attempted to present Maestro’s Segerstam description exactly as it appears in Alba’s booklet. If you think that’s incoherent, you should hear his symphony! I don’t know if Segerstam was using the word 'happening' in its 1960s sense. To do so would be appropriate, though, because his Symphony No. 288 lets it all hang out, does its own thing, has a love-in, protests the war in Vietnam, burns its bra, watches 2001: A Space Odyssey, and drops acid all at the same time. It’s a bang crash whoosh thud whoop of a symphony, like a hippie Charles Ives, and I think it’s funny that it has been paired with Brahms’s ever-so-classical Symphony No. 1. No doubt that will annoy a lot of people. (Good.)"
Avatar Tue. 4/9/19 6:38pm TDK60:

..in the photo's structure, there's a circled-A anarchist symbol on top of the red paint, and covered by more silver paint. Too bad the art got messed up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 4/9/19 6:39pm David D:

Dean: Haha, thanks. I love the last sentence in particular!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 4/9/19 6:41pm David D:

TDK60: It is both art and an artifact, I suppose.
Avatar Tue. 4/9/19 6:41pm TDK60:

..who would want to annoy Brahmsians? (not little old me, heh heh..)
Avatar Tue. 4/9/19 6:41pm northguineahills:

Leif Segerstram, sounds Swedish, Turku Philharmonic Orchestra, Finnish, looks like the Swedes are sneaking in again when the Finns are looking at their eastern border... (Åland is the exception). I keed….
Avatar Tue. 4/9/19 6:42pm (unfashionably late) coelacanth∅:

greetings David & all
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 4/9/19 6:43pm David D:

Yeah, NGH, he is from the large Swedish minority of Western Finland, I believe.
Avatar Tue. 4/9/19 6:43pm TDK60:

David I suppose it is just more art, on art!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 4/9/19 6:44pm David D:

Hey there, Coelacanth∅!
Avatar Tue. 4/9/19 6:46pm TDK60:

wait a second, Symphony #288? Yow.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 4/9/19 6:47pm David D:

Yes, and he's not messing with the numbers, either. I'm looking forward to the complete set.
Avatar Tue. 4/9/19 6:48pm northguineahills:

@TDK: Don't get me started on Braxton's opus numbering systems.....
Avatar Tue. 4/9/19 6:51pm TDK60:

OK NGH, won't get ya started. I am enjoying the "bang crash whoosh thud whoop."
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 4/9/19 6:51pm fred:

If House musicians could agree on a numbering system, it would make my current task a work much easier, doable even
Avatar Tue. 4/9/19 6:51pm northguineahills:

@David: Well, Sweden did rule Finland forever until Russia had a go at it. Actually, the middle classes spoke Swedish and Finnish was thought to be a peasant language, until the nationalist movement that started in the 1870s (see Sibelius), when Finnish started to be a point of pride.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 4/9/19 6:54pm David D:

Fred: What is your current task? Sounds intriguing...
Avatar Tue. 4/9/19 6:55pm northguineahills:

I'm the most un-OCD person until it comes to cataloging, then I'm hyper-OCD....
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 4/9/19 6:58pm chresti:

Thanks David! gathering my baskets so I'm ready to disembark soon, when we come into the station

Avatar Tue. 4/9/19 6:59pm northguineahills:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 4/9/19 7:00pm Michael 98145:

thanks again, David D. another one for the archives!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 4/9/19 7:01pm David D:

Thanks everyone, one more track after this one to close...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 4/9/19 7:01pm fred:

@David: finding ISRC codes for 5000+ tracks downloaded from YouTube, mainly electro, a quarter of the total house. House tracks have many remixes, and radio edits that may have the same name, but are shorted. I have to cross-check artist name, track title, length, and in some cases some sleuthing about track history. It's driving me crazy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 4/9/19 7:03pm David D:

That does sound a bit overwhelming, Fred, good luck with it all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 4/9/19 7:04pm fred:

Thanks for the show David!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 4/9/19 7:05pm chresti:

Avatar Tue. 4/9/19 7:07pm northguineahills:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 4/9/19 7:10pm fred:

@ngh: no, it's a nightmare. Combining databases with inconsistent naming (discogs, musicbrainz), a database with only manual access (IFPI) and faulty metadata, with a deadline next week.
