Lou Rawls sings about the alphabet from the grand old days of children's TV. November 2007
Razormaid remixes Eartha Kitt's "Cha Cha Heels". June 2005
A hip hop tribute to the glories of hemp. April 2006
In 1964 Ronald Reagan, Lee Marvin, Angie Dickenson, and John Cassavetes stared in the Don Siegel film adaptation of Ernest Hemingway's "The Killers" According to the Criterion site it was a serious casting coup not lost on anyone: "Ronald Reagan, in his final screen appearance and his first-ever role as a bad guy... turns out to be the most believable of heavies: there’s nothing flamboyant or demonic about him, just a drab, businesslike demeanor and an absolute coldness in the gaze"
The scene seems simple: Reagan's Jack Browning wants Cassavetes' Johnny North to keep his mind on driving for the heist and not on his girl (Dickenson's Sheila Farr) Browning slaps Farr and North punches Browning.
But none of those fake names matter anymore - In a strange way this clip ends up capturing an epic showdown between the forces of creativity and artistic expression and the forces of evil - and for a brief second the bad guy ends up with his face bloodied!

He mentioned aliens in a speech. He was the President of the United States. Really. September 2005
Edited for the radio courtesy of WFMU. July 2006
LA's Real Done Steele tells the story of a lovable spud named Cecil who dreams of becoming a delicious frenchfry. When he finally does, he laments that the rest of his fry buddies are bought by a customer, and Cecil is left alone. May 2007
If only all muzak were half this intelligent. More MP3's and info about this Japanese band available here. June 2005
From the soundtrack to the book I, Lucifer by Glen Duncan. Great soundtrack, as is this cool black and white animated video of the song (wmv video file), by Alex Budovsky, which apparently won the best animated short award at Sundance last year. October 2005
Castanets, eyeshadow that just won't quit, red lady-talons, white-blond hair to match that snappy blazer... and she's just the backup coo-er. Check out this decidedly smiley public access karaoke version of "New York, New York," featuring the talents of Nilda Reaxch and Jose Adames July 2006
This mediocre bar band somehow manages to transform themselves into something else, something, dare I say, otherworldly... May 2007
June 2006
Rockin' 50s band from Rochester, NY as collected on long-forgotten vinyl singles as well as some live recordings that haven't been heard since the day they were committed to tape. Their lead singer was Steve Alaimo who later embarked on a solo career that scored him a couple hits and regular spot on "Where the Action Is" with Paul Revere and the Raiders. He later moved into production work. October 2007

A hip hop tribute to the glories of hemp. April 2006
Strange rendition of "Nature Boy," featuring The Voice Of Love, a sort of Bas Sheva / Yma Sumac style vocal. These Don Reed mp3s were transferred from a mint-condition 45 which means that the distortion is inherent in the pressing. May 2007
A more pedestrian collaboration with eden ahbez, who probably scratched it out in 2 minutes in order to get the publishing credit on the throw-away B-side. May 2007
From his 1973 Berlin record. The little kids who can be heard wailing were the young children of producer Bob Ezrin, who were crying because their Dad had told them that their mother had just been killed in a horrible accident. Their mother was fine - the track needed some crying, so Producer Ezrin produced some. The crying starts at the 5:17 mark. September 2006
In those pre-Clear Channel days of lore, many radio interviews were generically pre-recorded. A label sent stations "Interview Albums" with scripts for the DJs to use, and an album's worth of answers from the rock star in question. Here are the MP3s of the Interview Record that RCA put out for Lou Reed's The Blue Mask album, the script of which is available here November 2006
In 1961 The American Medical Association hired the Gipper for a viral marketing campaign dubbed I kid you not, 'Operation Coffeecup.' Doing his part to scuttle the arrival of Medicare Reagan lays down an 11 minute rap explaining how Socialized Medicine can only lead to an America where men are not free. This record was then mailed out to the 'ladies auxiliary' (doctors wives) of the AMA in each county. Was it this little record that kept Medicare from being signed into law until July 1965? Is this why we still don't have Universal Health Care? June 2007
Elis sings "Waters of March" (11 meg, Quicktime file), written by Antonio Carlos Jobim. She gets comically exasperated towards the end of the song and starts cracking up, but it seems so genuine that it it's hard to believe this was simply part of her act. Not sure who she is playing with here, but if you already love her voice, you'll love her even more when you see her sing. February 2006
The Regina Music Boxes played interchangeable musical discs, not cylinders. Here's a version of Johann Strauss' Vienna Blood. From David Suisman's 2002 Marathon premium "Machines vs. Music". September 2005
Les Reines Prochaines are an all-women multilingual feminist band from Switzerland. Founded in 1987 by Teresa Alonso, Regina Florida Schmid, and Muda Mathis, The Future Queens started out only with a synthesizer and their voices. Over the years they have added more instruments, and apart from music and performance the members have been very active in other forms of art as well. One of the reasons for their low profile in the USA might be that they have never performed here. Their only North American tour to this date, in 2005, consisted exclusively of Canadian gigs. September 2006
Nice cover version of the Chris Isaak song, starts out relatively normal, adds great background screaming in the second half. September 2006
Sparse cover version of As Tears Go By by the Stones, from the album Lob Ehre Ruhm Dank. September 2006
Features the great lines (in German) "Even Dvorak started as a butcher" and "I am so looking forward to my first sheep". September 2006
