Country novelty singer Doye O'Dell made a name for himself in the late 40s and 50s singing songs like "Bath Tub Blues," "Old Shep," and "Dear Oakie." Here's one of the singing Texan's most popular numbers. May 2009
Gustaf Offerman from Czechoslovakia is an overaged drummer and bandleader of this party style band with his own name and you can't deny that this makes you want to dance. In contrary to the rest of the eastern Europe bands on this record Gustav and his orchestra have English lyrics. Well... almost. August 2007

"The Flag" was written by Louisiana rockabilly wild man Dale Hawkins, vocalized by Maurice Ogden, and released on Gene Autry's Challenge label in 1964. Happy Flag Day! June 2008
An editorial from Keith Olberman in which he employs a vocal style reminiscent of Byron Macgregor on his show Countdown, on October 18th, 2006. November 2006
Olde Frothingslosh (MP3's) In the 1970's my brother was an avid collector of independently brewed beer, he belonged to a club that sent monthly samples of the stuff. Well, having read in a book about Olde Frothingslosh, the "Pale Stale Ale" and proudly-self-proclaimed worst beer in the world, 8-year old me was hopping up and down at the prospect of it arriving in the mail like Ralphie in A Christmas Story waiting for his Red Ryder BB Gun. And sure enough, a can of this stuff did arrive for my brother, and I set upon drinking it immediately. The company claimed the "foam was on the bottom", which I didn't quite see, but I was in awe of the picture on the can, a photo of an enormous woman in a bathing suit lying on top of a bear, who had clearly been crushed by her. Turns out the stuff was just really a joke repackaging of Iron City Beer for holidays/collectability, but still, was like Mad Magazine crossing over into real life. Here's a "plea" (MP3) from the company spokesman, and also an excerpt (MP3) from an "official" Olde Frothingslosh newscast, chronicled from a site dedicated to Pittsburgh DJ Rege Cordic who wrote this history of the beer and sort of was the point man of steamrolling the "foam on the bottom" myth. December 2005
They come from Olympia, WA, a thinly populated area crowned with woods and spooky state parks at night. Old Time Relijun brings us music springing from places far from human voices and it involves much growling. Plus free jazzish-freakouts, instrumental and otherwise! Here's a track from their latest 2007 release, "Catharsis in Crisis." October 2007
Warning: making direct eye contact with Rebel's blingin' belt for over 10 seconds will result in corneal damage. July 2006
A version of Cake from Kenny G's two-part Cake-a-thon. April 2006
April 2007
From the 1984 soundtrack to "Breakin' 2: Electric Boogaloo", the entirety of which can be found here. February 2006
From the 1987 LP "Egito Madagascar." February 2009
R.I.P ODB. Taken from an actual hip-hop tribute to Phil Collins out on a European label called "Urban Renewal" (including Kelis and Li'l Kim!) December 2004
While we're on the subject, check out this MP3 of Ol' Dirty Bastard trying out for the role of Mr. Ed for a Fox TV remake of the program, shortly before his death. Is this legit? Did ODB really want to play the voice of a talking horse? We have yet to uncover any evidence nixing the theory. June 2005
1975 monster fuzz-death jam by Omega. The band definitely emerged from a more trad background (apparently they started out around the early 60's covering Beatles and U.S. pop bands), but "Tuzvihar" hints at some heavier directions to follow. August 2007
WFMU favorites Oneida perform a track from their 2006 effort "Happy New Year" on Jagjaguar. October 2007
We are pleased to present Ronnie Ong's blazin' cover of "Buttons and Bows" as heard on the Steam Kodak compilation re-issue of 60s Southeast Asian underground rock. According to the liner notes, the dashing Mr. Ong is remembered as Singapore's answer to Trini Lopez. Quite an accolade, huh? February 2005
eautiful song by Michigan weirdos Only A Mother. Frank Pahl, the main creative force behind this band, has also released several solo albums and nowadays leads the Scavenger Quartet. July 2007
March 2007
Experiment in manually hitting the pause button during instrumental bridges to create a sloppy condensed version with just the lyrics. Except for verse three, where it is reversed. October 2006
Eerily sexual, nightmarishly mystical, gloomy, pounding, angry, demented and hypnotic folk music: sure to produce psychosis in high doses, especially for the young and impressionable. On Germany's Artware Records. August 2007

In 1977 four New Englanders of varying musical goals convened for a private press LP under the name Orange, that by all accounts was born under stressful circumstances and upon release got no love from friends or family of all members involved, one of whom was modern free-blowing stalwart Paul Flaherty. Now reissued on DeStijl, "In the Midst of Chaos" is an interesting peek at a short-lived combo at odds with itself: Flaherty obviously pushed for the freedom aspect while the others were split between trad leanings, fusion/bloozy needs, and McCoy Tyner fixations. The result of the recording is a very cool LP with some almost MX-80 moments of electric guitar flurry from Barry Greika, tranquil soundscapes with a few electronic flourishes, and some hippo-charging sax action from Flaherty. Here is a sample, the track from which the title of the LP is taken. July 2008

Orchid Spangiafora is Rob Carey sometimes aided by Byron Coley & Chris Osgood (of the Suicide Commandos)." This album came out in 1979, and has got to be the weirdest record ever released on Twin/Tone. Brilliant, obsessive, hilarious spoken word-tape-cut-up-hell of the highest order. For audio samples, or to purchase a "custom CD-R" from Twin/Tone, click here. September 2005
"Voodoo" music from Brazil circa 1958 from the album "Obaluaye!" May 2009
A hitherto unknown corporate musical made for salesmen, about selling birth control to women. The Challenge of Change" and has no credits - actors, musicians, or otherwise. All the songs are parodies. April 2007

Black metal from France. January 2007
Dominated by the samba drumming of Yasuhiro Yoshigaki, leader of the brass quintet Orquesta Bore, this 1997 number is a Brazilified cover of the hit, by the hugely popular girl group Nenes, which virtuallylaunched the Okinawan Pop craze. July 2005
If you really grooved to Hazy Osterwald Jet Set doing "Swinging London" on Volume 2 of "The In-Kraut," then here's a real treat: four more tunes by one of Switzerland's greatest exports, Hazy Osterwald. Starting in 1949, Hazy constantly toured the globe, often playing up to 300 dates a year. He appeared in movies, scored huge hits (“Kriminaltango”, 1959), ran his own record label (Mabel), and even owned a string of nightclubs (Hazyland). These tracks are from the album "Hazy Osterwald Jet Set," released circa 1970. September 2008
Two tracks from "Werewolves and Lollipops" (Sub Pop).
While perhaps the phrase "Wackity Schmackity Doo" has get to infiltrate the mainstream American psyche, Patton Oswalt has been entering more living rooms via higher profile TV gigs (and flicks, he's the voice of the head vermin in Ratatouille) and now thanks to Sub Pop a whole lot of new CD decks and iPods. Indie comedy has long been a cozy compadre to Indie rock, but until that world is completely ready to come to terms with the crackcore stylings of Rick Shapiro (if it ever will be), Oswalt is treading some serious darkshit terrain while still able to come off as an affable, audience-friendly fellow. His unabashed comic nerd-dom times a completely fearless attack into some of the deepest darkest wells of absurdity made him the odd man out for sure at the Flav roast a few weeks back (you can tell mutual hatred between he and Carrot Top was no mere TV moment), but we love him dearly here at WFMU.

Here's a track from an LP called "Em Amplitude Modulada" released by Brazilian band Os Atonais in 2000. Led by Marcelo Birck and Leandro Blessmann, the band only lasted a couple of years, but their lo-fi effort echoes the Jovem-guarda feel of the best of 60s Brazilian music. March 2009
A hit song in the United Kingdom in 1977. August 2006
Gary Numan meets Devo in an EMI cage match (without apostrophes). That's San Fran synth-poppers Our Daughters Wedding on a Design Records 45 from 1980. April 2008
Here's a track from a psychedelic-flavored quad demonstration record from 1973, presented in the form of a sound-effect montage tracking humankind's ascension from biped to interstellar traveler. This is the opening cut from Ovation's 1973 quad sampler, the rest of which is filled with the sort of eclectic jazz cuts that made up most of Ovation's catalog. March 2009
As spasticated duos go, the Milanese m/f duo Ovo scramble up a blasted universe of weirdness to rival the output of kindred sprits Afrirampo, Captain/Tennille, Holmes/Yoyo. There's playful elements of Deerhoof that give way to blurred hyperdrive guitar/cello/drums workouts that remind one of a chambery version of Melt Banana. But then there's an unmistakable doom element that's gotten them mentioned in the same breath as the Melvins, though any serious preconceptions about operating within the confining parameters of that get thrown out the window as soon as vocalist Stefania Pedretti lets it fly. In other words, Ovo are clearly about freedom, while retaining a heaviosity factor amidst the confusion. Apparently she's played her braided hair with a bow as well. They've had a slew of recordings (some of which are on drummer Bruno's great Bar La Muerte label which gave us FMU fave Daniele Brusaschetto), have toured the USA (returning again in September) and have landed their latest disc Miastenia on a higher profile US label, Load Records. June 2006
On Load Records. December 2006
An odd country 45 on Rose records. The title says it all. January 2008
Recording the Bay Area group Oxbow "unplugged" so to speak isn't as easy as one would think; under normal circumstances (i.e. electric), the band teeters in the mix with a delicate blend of tension, eerie ambient drones, explosions of math-rock mayhem, and stumbling-down-the-stairs blues, all dragged along by the rather unconventional vocal approach of frontman Eugene Robinson. Eugene, a bona-fide competitive bodybuilder, takes harrowing subject matter and creates high theater (in live situations especially) quite often physically dragging the audience into one psychodrama or another; you'd expect something like this from say, Darby Crash, but could Darby pull off an effective Nina Simone cover or duet with Marianne Faithfull? When Eugene and Oxbow guitarist Niko Wenner played an acoustic set on Brian's show back in November 2004, the dynamic of host-behind-the-glass-watching-performer took on a very new kind of vibe; engineer Gil Shuster needed to accomodate Eugene's most whispered moents and chaotic, slobbering outbursts into account in the mix, he could be in your ear quiet one second and pinning the meters running around the room the next. But it worked, and the particular mix in this session is one of the more fascinating excercises in live music recording here in recent memory. Hear for example, the Beatles' la-la ode "Girl" turned into what sounds like a person caged in confined quarters about to knock a hole in the wall, while Niko balanced the song's delicacy with downright disturbing tension you could cut with a knife. Check the rest of the session by going here. October 2005
