The question many people will ask upon hearing a tape like this would very likely be, "Is this thing some kind of a joke?" Or, if not that, "Was this guy nuts or something?" Well, if, indeed, you find yourself asking these questions after hearing these excerpts you can get the answers to your questions right now without further straining your brain: NO, this tape was done in all seriousness and, YES, Joe was completely nuts when he recorded this and, most likely, still is.
I own two tapes by Joe, both of which are the aural equivalent of beating yourself on the forehead with a 2 X 4 (with a nail in it) for 90 minutes. He also did a third tape of phone pranks (one can only imagine!) that, sadly, I never bought, and he produced a zine, as well, which I heard was just as wild as the tape. The only reason I didn't buy everything he ever did was due to a lack of funds, but I am now considering writing the PO Box address on the off chance he is still around. I last communicated with the man six years ago.
Apparently, some tracks from this tape got some airplay on the Church of the SubGenius radio show some years back. A friend of mine who liked that crap heard it, bought "Mockery and Perversion" and played it for me. I have no idea how many other people have heard this thing but, in my opinion, this is some of the most disturbing material I have ever heard. While any armchair psychologist can have a field day listening to these tapes trying to figure out what is wrong with Joe, I would suggest consulting the works of Anton LaVey in lieu of Sigmund Freud although, from what I've gathered, even the Church of Satan didn't want anything to do with this guy. At any rate, listening to the two tapes I own display some seriously arrested emotional and psychological development and that's putting it mildly. Sure, we all enjoyed making tapes or "radio shows" when we were kids but, apparently, Joe liked it so much he tries doing it as a 30-something-year-old and attempts to regress back to his early teen years while he's doing it in order to obtain some sort of psycho-sexual gratification. Then, again, it's doubtful this guy gets laid much so it's probably better than nothing!
