Janis Joplin  Mercedes Benz   Favoriting Pearl  Columbia  1970  Written at Vahsen's Bar in Port Chester, NY (my hometown) on August 8, 1970. It was performed that very night at The Capitol Theater around the corner from Vahsen's. Wiki link More info per Bob Neuwirth: On August 8, 1970, as the Associated Press circulated the news about Smith's new gravestone, Joplin performed at the Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, New York. It was there that she first performed "Mercedes Benz", a song (partially inspired by a Michael McClure poem) that she had composed with fellow musician and friend Bob Neuwirth a very short time earlier.[83] According to Myra Friedman's account,[26] Joplin performed two shows at the Capitol Theatre, the first of which was attended by actors Geraldine Page and her husband Rip Torn.[26] Between the shows, at a "gin mill" [Friedman's words] very close to this concert venue, Joplin and Neuwirth penned the lyrics to the song[26] and she performed it at the second show, according to Friedman.[26] Neuwirth was quoted by The Wall Street Journal in 2015: "Around 7 p.m., after the Capitol sound check, we had a couple of hours to kill before [acts that opened for Joplin] Seatrain and Runt finished their sets. So the four of us [Joplin, Neuwirth, Geraldine Page, Rip Torn] walked to a bar about three minutes away called Vahsen’s [at 30 Broad Street in Port Chester]."[83] While in Vahsen's, "Janis came up with words for the first verse. I was in charge of writing them down on bar napkins with a ballpoint pen. She came up with the second verse, too, about a color TV. I suggested words here and there, and came up with the third verse—about asking the Lord to buy us a night on the town and another round."[84]

She performs from time to time with her sister Wendy and her daughter with her husband on keys (I believe) and Al Jardine & his son and I think his wife. So an extended family band.

By not being around I mean being kicked out 2 years prior. for posting an "unappropriate" vid

good for them, music began as a family thing for wilson's, appropriate that it should continue

Dang. Reading (while listening) about how some whackjob tried to burn down Mississippi Records in Portland. Luckily someone working early in the neighboring restaurant caught it and helped put it out, but a bunch of records got burned up and literally everything else in the store is covered in fire extinguisher dust.

Totally!! And they sound fantastic!! Just so much history on that stage plus I was sitting near Carl Wilsons son who looks eerily JUST like his dad.

No one was hurt but it's effectively shut the store down until it can be put back in order.
Unsurprisingly, as the owner and crew are so nice, there's this George Bailey like deluge of people helping out and cleaning records, etc. It's turned into a virtual street party.

No motive so far. Maybe just a random crazy person. As I am sure you're aware, record stores can attract some real characters, some of them pretty malignant. But it could just as easily be a person struggling with mental illness. Who knows?

I caught them at the Libbey Bowl in Ojai, CA, but I believe they have more dates coming up... Feb they'll be in Modesto. I hope they go on a bigger tour together. More folks deserve to see them.

yes, thx, had the somewhat unfounded suspicion that it could be because the label puts out music by "foreigners"
