↳ Song: "Dragnet Mambo" by "Machito"

I have three chapters of this hardboiled radio paperback lined up today. We're starting off on the bad side of town. And by "bad" we might mean "fun"...

There should just be more Andre Williams in general. Always worth it.

↳ Song: "Black Dahlia" by "Johnny Legend"
not to be confused with John Legend
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:30pm
Austin Rich:

↳ Mr Fab @12:29
I came across a short-lived punk band called The Smiths, not to be confused with Morrissey's band, or the one from the 60's, just called "Smith." Sort of makes them google-proof, in a way.
Avatar 12:31pm
Mr Fab:

we'll be hearing a number of other true-life tales of Hollywood noir from John Gilmore thru out this chapter
Avatar 12:32pm
Mr Fab:

↳ Austin Rich @12:30
Weird!?! Never heard of them. But I'm sure I'd prefer them to Moz, haha.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:33pm
Austin Rich:

↳ Mr Fab @12:32
Certainly the better "Smiths."

There was a PDX punk band in the 70's called The Descendent too, not connected to the more famous one, and again, not around for long.

I know my old band - Cathead - discovered a few bands since then who have taken the name. Not to mention The Catheads, who we are not connected to.

Jack Webb/Sgt Friday repeatedly pops up unexpectedly thru out this chapter.

"Descendents," pardon.

↳ Song: "Here Today, Gone Tomorrow" by "Dada"
This sounds weirdly like some kind of Marc Ribot project but I looked them up and nope.
Very cool.

LA band - I worked with a girl who's boyfriend was in DADA. And she was in a band called The Descendants! They had to change their name of course.

I was also in a band, Akimbo, long before the famous one emerged. But then there are the multitude of "insta-bands," one night stand ensembles gathered to play a party: Shit From Shinola, Sweet Pudd'nheads, Goddamn Tractor, Elephants Dupree... Pretty sure they are low risk dupes.

and still no closer to cracking this case. I reached for a can of Red Bull I keep in my bottom drawer. Then SHE walked in...
  1:07pm
Dean:

Gilmore is the author of Severed: The True Story of the Black Dahlia Murder? Way back in the early '90s I was working on a system migration at a public library. I had to be onsite late one night to keep in touch with the vendor performing the migration. I was in the basement, my office, with the server. Unless the remote vendor made a request, I had nothing to do, so I grabbed the then new book, Severed, from the shelf where it was awaiting cataloging, and I read the whole thing. Left the office well past midnight.
Avatar 1:10pm

Did those excerpts sound familiar? I assume they were from that book.

Arto Lindsay on noise guitar, Anton Fig of The Feelies on drums

Oh, shoot, I actually missed the airing. He wrote a second book about the murder, so could be from that one, too.

My mom was a big H Bogart fan, so saw some noir classics growing up . Discovered Raymond Chandler at around age 17 and was obsessed. Would read his books over and over. But the audio equivalent was pretty obscure. Didn't really start to get a handle on it til years later.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:24pm

If you are listening, and you like Bogart, and you aren't listening to Dimestore Radio Theater on Monday's, you should tune in! We have Bogart and Bacall every week!

have you heard the Philip Marlowe radio series, Austin?

warning: It deviates pretty far from Chandler.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:04pm
Austin Rich:

↳ Mr Fab @2:02
I have, and while I agree that it deviates a lot, I like it. They got a good cast, and even the "lighter" stories are fun.

I'll run it on Dimestore someday, but I figured I'd run a few other things first.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:07pm
Austin Rich:

↳ Mr Fab @2:02
Here's a secret about the Radio Noir that I wrote: I took a few episodes of the Philip Marlowe show, and deconstructed them, to get a sense of the formula. Then I wrote my show following that formula. (Probably not as well... but... it seemed like a good place to start.) After that I did a lot of revising, but the basic outline came from that show.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:19pm

Mr. Fab will be excited to know that I now have, in the can, enough shows to cover both Dimesore and MVM through to the end of the year.
