There's a pretty funny story on the Criterion Mystery Train disc about Screaming Jay and the young Japanese actors. Jay had served in the South Pacific and been captured and tortured and felt triggered being on set with them but, as it turned out, they were big fans and, when they met (after Jarmusch had talked Jay down a bit) they flattered him profusely...and from there everything was fine...
