I must have gone through like 5 bios on him already! haha I'm obsessed. Aside from obviously being a multi instrumentalist wizard, his techy tweaks like de-tuning the Linn drum machine and creating that "sound" that was used from 1999 thru Sign is pretty spectacular. The Prince and the Purple Rain Era Studio Sessions: 1983 and 1984 book breaks it down almost like a diary---it's pretty insane how he was music 24/7.

Oh yes, that rimshot sound of the linn-drum. I remember that one hit wonder band called Ready For The World with 'Oh Sheila', using that same sound to imitate that 1999-era Prince sound.

My 3 fave are
Prince and the Purple Rain Era Studio Sessions: 1983 and 1984 (Prince Studio Sessions) by Duane Tudahl, Dance, Music, Sex, Romance: The First Decade by Per Nilsen and Prince: The Man and His Music by Matt Thorne. Prince was actually working on an auto bio but it was finished posthumously called The Beautiful Ones which features fab hand written lyrics but nothing too juicy. Dan Piepenbring from The New Yorker does a nice forward where he followed Prince for a year that's pretty fascinating. Him describing their first meet up is pretty hilarious.
