Clarence is the pianist of the group. I just adjusted the picture ;-)

There's no mention of who's singing, in the file/tags. I will do some search right away

Possibly Eva Taylor: it seems the band also used the alias Eva Taylor and her Playboys
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12am
Jan Turkenburg:

Eva Taylor was Clarence's wife, I just found out: "Vocalists include Williams, his wife Eva Taylor, Ed Allen, white pop singers Chick Bullock and Dick Robertson and Little Buddy Farrior, about whom little or nothing is known"

Just found out at wfmu.org... that I've played that rendition of Mama Inez for the third time now. Well, it's a recording. that's worth a replay or two :-)

Hi all! Sorry I'm late. I hate it when work gets in the way of my listening!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41am
Jan Turkenburg:

In Dutch we say "drie maal is scheepsrecht"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41am
Jan Turkenburg:

Hi Dave!
  10:41am
Listener Robert:

Wow, you're working this "evening" theme pretty hard and long. We know it's evening where you are.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42am
Jan Turkenburg:

Google translates scheepsrecht with charm, which is understandable now, but wrong
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42am
Jan Turkenburg:

Hi Robert, well, still over an hour to go though.
  10:44am
Listener Robert:

The "recht" part I can figure out at least approximately as "right", but all the "scheeps" I can think of are probably false cognates.
  10:48am
Listener Robert:

Ah, "ships right" for the literal meaning, but figuring out the metaphor of "three times" having to do with maritime rules is the hard part.

OK, since a "right" is something that is owed to someone, I get that that piece was so good that playing it 3 times was deserved, as if by "the rules".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49am
Jan Turkenburg:

'maritime law' would be the best approximation. A good part of Dutch expressions have maritime origin
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50am
Mx. Granny (e/em):

Greetings, Jan and folx!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50am
Jan Turkenburg:

or right as in having the right to: having the right to have three attempts to get it right.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51am
Jan Turkenburg:

Granny!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52am
Jan Turkenburg:

It's often said when somebody succeeds after three attempts.
  10:55am
Listener Robert:

That's like the metaphors that are derived from carpentry in places where there was a lot of wood, or from field farming where there was a lot of that.

Avatar 10:58am
Ursula1000:

morning everyone!
  10:58am
Listener Robert:

I could see how Google Translare might back-translate that phrase from the English equivalent, "third time's the charm", and thereby confuse scheepsrecht with "charm".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58am
Mx. Granny (e/em):

U to the 1 to the K!

Hi Granny, Robert and U1k
  11:02am
Listener Robert:

We do have a similar expression to "scheepsrecht" in this context in English: "ship shape".
"Ship shape" means "in order".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:02am
Mx. Granny (e/em):

welcome, Darryl!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:02am
Mx. Granny (e/em):

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03am
Jan Turkenburg:

My thoughts exactly Robert and now you mention it. I've heard "ship shape" several times, getting the meaning from the context, without realizing where it must have come from.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04am
Jan Turkenburg:

LOL Granny!
Avatar 11:05am
worldsworstrecords:

Ah! Zarah Leander! Wunderbar!
  11:06am

Apparently these phrases derive from experience that on board a ship. if things are not in their right place, disaster may occur.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06am
Mx. Granny (e/em):

if you saw my Uncle's beautiful wooden boat, you'd jave no doubt what ship shape is—it's absolutely impeccable.

  11:14am
Listener Robert:

There's another metaphor! In "Ce Soir Encore" I didn't understand "Fermez-moi des reves," literally, "close me of/from dreams". Google Translate, however, gave "fermez-moi" as "shut me up", so he's saying, "No more dreams, send me love!"
